BAFTA TV Awards: The Crown's Jonathan Pryce gushes about current 'Golden Age' of TV

The Crown and Slow Horses star Jonathan Pryce has opened up about his thoughts on current TV.

Speaking with virginradio.co.uk and other press alongside other cast from Slow Horses at the BAFTA TV Awards 2024, the 3 Body Problem actor agreed that we are currently witnessing another “golden age” in TV.

“We’ve had a few golden ages, and I’ve seen most of them in my life,” the actor shared. “There is great television at the moment, really great television. And it’s hard to keep up and you know, devote yourself to one series at a time rather than jumping about,” he admitted.

“And bingeing - I quite like it when they don’t let you see all the episodes at once, they’re spread out week after week [instead] and you’ve got something to look forward to. But no, it’s a great great television age.”

Speaking along with his Slow Horses cast mates Saskia Reeves and Chris Reilly at last night (12 May)’s event, Pryce admitted he’d not expected the Apple TV+ show to perform as phenomenally well as it has. The actor felt this was a benefit for the whole production, however, as it meant that everyone could focus on simply making the best show from the script and not on trying to please an imagined expectant audience.

Slow Horses series four has already been filmed and will be released on Apple TV+ in the future, but there is currently no news regarding whether Pryce’s recent Netflix project 3 Body Problem will be getting a second series.

While (spoilers!) it is very unlikely Pryce will return to play a role in series two of the show, which is based on the famous Chinese sci-fi trilogy novels of the same name by Liu Cixin, his fellow co-star Eiza González told virginradio.co.uk on the red carpet premiere for the show that the creative team are prepared for another season.

“We’re only in a very short span of the first book,” she stressed. “There’s so much more still to discover, we would love to get a second season. Hopefully people will check in and watch it and fall in love with it and give us the opportunity to keep telling this story.”

Last night (12th May)’s BAFTA TV Awards celebrated a stellar year in UK and global TV. Highlights of the show included Happy Valley’s Sarah Lancashire tearfully accepting her Best Actress award after the show’s final series aired last year, comedian Joe Lycett’s hilarious acceptance speech which he made while dressed as Elizabeth I, and the slightly awkward moment when hosts Rob and Romesh had to receive an award themselves.
