Hawks, ’Canes win openers

Bethlehem Catholic and Liberty survived the first round of the EPC baseball tournament on Monday afternoon. The Golden Hawks pulled the biggest surprise of the quarterfinals, as they walloped second-seeded Emmaus 11-1.

Caden Deegan and Phillip Taylor each knocked in a pair of RBI, as Becahi poured in nine runs in the second, third and fourth innings to blow the game open.

Taylor and Jeremy Fyrer gave up a combined three hits on the mound to push Becahi to Tuesday’s semifinals where they took on Nazareth past Press deadlines.

The Blue Eagles pushed past Freedom in Monday’s quarterfinals 3-1, while Liberty stayed on their quest to defend their league crown from a year ago, as they topped Parkland 6-2.

Noah Gyauch-Quirk led the Hurricanes on the mound with five scoreless innings and six strikeouts. Braylen Gonzalez knocked in two RBI for Liberty, who advanced to play top-seeded Pocono Mountain East in Tuesday’s semis at DeSales.

Tuesday’s winners will move to Thursday night’s 7 p.m. championship back at DeSales.
