Wheels of Fleet's Gatehouse base named in memory of much-loved local resident

It was an emotional day at the second Wheels of Fleet Bike Fayre in Gatehouse on Saturday when its base was renamed in memory of a much- loved local resident.

From now on the project’s repair shop will be known as Leo’s Workshop as a tribute to Leo McClymont.

The popular senior citizen passed away on St Andrew’s Day last year, 11 days before his 95th birthday.

Pedal power enthusiasts gathered around the community bicycle hub for an informal ceremony at 11am.

The new sign and name for workshop was unveiled by Leo’s friend and neighbour Isabel McLeod.

Wheels of Fleet coordinator Danny Alderslowe told the News afterwards: “From now on the workshop will be called Leo’s Workshop. We wanted to celebrate the life of a wonderful man.

“Leo sadly passed away last November and one of his neighbours, Isabelle McLeod, unveiled the sign.

“Everyone enjoyed the story of Leo’s exciting life, written by his good friend Charlie.”

Danny added: “There were not a few tears as well as admiration for Leo, who would always stop to chat.

“His years in the Creetown Band, cycling trips and teaching at Kirkcudbright Academy are but a few parts of the packed life Leo experienced. We repaired Leo’s walking aid a few times which he really appreciated.”

The Bike Fayre was a big success with a steady stream of people viewing or bringing bikes to buy or swap at affordable prices.

Sellers were invited to donate a percentage of the proceeds from each transaction towards the project.

Danny said: “It was great to see so many folk enjoying bike bargains. People really appreciated the chance to try a bike out on the day.

“We had the local Macmillan Cancer fundraising group attending as well, which added to the warm and friendly atmosphere. They served drinks and biscuits and raised £105 for what in anybody’s book is a worthy cause.

“Some of the town’s young cyclists also painted banners for big bike event, the Gralloch, which is coming to Gatehouse on Saturday. Then they got on the smoothie bike and made everyone delicious fruit smoothies.

“But most of all, the event was glowing on the memory of Leo, with local musicians entertaining everybody with great tunes.”

Danny added: “I’d like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all those attending and the many who made this event possible.

“Special mention has to go to Wheels of Fleet volunteers and staff for their dedicated work, the local community centre for the donation of tables and chairs, Gatehouse Gala group for the gazebos and to the Men’s Shed and Mill on the Fleet sharing the space.

“It was another amazing event in Gatehouse, pedal powered by an amazing community.”
