Pearl Jam Covers Tom Waits’ ‘Picture In A Frame’ For 1st Time In 8 Years

Pearl Jam performed in Sacramento, California last night for the first time since 1998. The 25-song concert at Golden 1 Center featured eight tour debuts including a cover of Tom Waits‘ “Picture In A Frame,” which was last played in 2016.

The Seattle-based rockers kicked off the night with tour debuts of “Pendulum” off 2013’s Lightning Bolt and “I’m Open” off 1996’s No Code. Next came the beloved “Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Time” ahead of the trek’s first “Faithfull.”

Pearl Jam continued with a run of “Scared Of Fear,” “React, Respond,” “Wreckage” and the title track from their recently released studio album, Dark Matter. The four songs start the LP and were played in the same order as appears on the record. From there, the band offered 2024 debuts of “Garden” and “Lukin” with “Corduroy” following before the tour’s first “Dance Of The Clairvoyants.”

The rest of last night’s main set contained a mix of classics (“Even Flow” and “Better Man”), Dark Matter cuts (“Upper Hand,” “Waiting For Stevie” and “Running”) and another tour debut (“Light Years”). Frontman Eddie Vedder returned to the stage by himself to open the encore with a solo “Picture In A Frame.” While the Tom Waits cover hadn’t been performed at a Pearl Jam show in over eight years, Vedder has tackled the song as recently as 2019 at one of his own concerts.

Vedder’s bandmates emerged for the rest of the seven-song encore. Pearl Jam went the old school route in delivering “Jeremy,” “Black,” “Do The Evolution,” “Alive” and “Porch” before capping the night by returning to Dark Matter for the “Setting Sun” finale.
