OBITUARY: United States Air Force Veteran Peter Griffith, 69, of Melbourne, Passed Away May 6

Peter Griffith passed away on the morning of May 6, 2024, at the age of 69 in Melbourne, FL. He was born on July 15, 1954 in St Phillip Barbados to parents Muriel Griffith and Collinwood Harewood. After retirement he spent his years refereeing soccer and lacrosse. He also worked at Patrick Space Force Base as a bus driver for the Force Support Squadron. He also was a helping hand for many of his friends and family.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Peter Griffith passed away on the morning of May 6, 2024, at the age of 69 in Melbourne, FL. He was born on July 15, 1954 in St Phillip Barbados to parents Muriel Griffith and Collinwood Harewood.

He was raised by his grandmother Nellie “Muna” Harewood and spent his younger years growing up in her rum shop. He attended primary school and attended Combermere for secondary School. His mother moved to New York when he was a teenager and he followed later.

He joined the United States Air Force in June 1974, where he served 20 years and retired in November 1994. While in the Air Force he was stationed in Arizona, England, Oklahoma, North Carolina, California, Alaska and Florida where he retired.

Upon his honorable discharge from the USAF he completed his Bachelor’s degree in Criminology and Master’s degree in Public Administration with a specialization in Criminology.

After retirement he spent his years refereeing soccer and lacrosse. He also worked at Patrick Space Force Base as a bus driver for the Force Support Squadron. He also was a helping hand for many of his friends and family.

A loving and devoted father, he married his wife Elizabeth (Liz) Griffith on July 1, 1978. They were introduced to each other by mutual family members. They have three children: Janelle, Keesha and Peter Jr.

Peter is survived by his wife Liz Griffith, his brothers Ricky Griffith and Collin Harewood, his sisters Rita Merrifield, Jacque Line, Annette Harewood and Hannah Harewood. He is also survived by his children Janelle Griffith, Keesha Griffith and Peter Griffith. He was preceded in death by his mother Muriel Griffith, his father Collinwood Harewood, and by his brother Wayne Griffith.

A funeral mass will be held at Ascension Catholic Church on May 21, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. at 2950 N Harbor City Blvd, Melbourne, FL 32935. The burial is to follow at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery at 1 p.m., at 5525 US-1, Mims FL 32754.
