In 1959, the town of Holcolm, Kansas was shocked by the murder of Herbert W. Clutter, his wife, Bonnie, and their children, Nancy and Kenyon. Learning about the murders before the killers had been captured, Truman Capote—with childhood friend and fellow author Harper Lee in tow—began interviewing residents & investigators and took numerous pages of notes. Spending six years working on the book, In Cold Blood was the result.

Reviewers, including Eliot Fremont-Smith of the New York Times, described the book as “an example of a new literary form, ‘the nonfiction novel.'” In Cold Blood also saw a resurgence of “true crime” as a literary genre.

For me, seeing this clue at home, I definitely thought “What else could it be?” I’m not willing to lay a guess on how it will play in studio, though.

Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: “O” Say; Can You See?; Prepositional Book Titles; Birdplay; Sports Venues; Pranks)

For the second night in a row, a challenger got off to a big start. The difference in this one was that Jonah got the Daily Double correct! He was at $9,000 after 15 clues to Will’s $1,400 and Allison’s -$400.

Statistics at the first break (15 clues):

Jonah 10 correct 1 incorrect
Will 3 correct 0 incorrect
Allison 1 correct 1 incorrect

Today’s interviews:

Will annoyed his mother by learning a bunch of stuff from “The Simpsons”.
Jonah was a PA on a period piece where was under the back seat of a Model T.
Allison celebrated her birthday by going to a dude ranch in Montana.

While both trailers had a good segment, Jonah still kept a commanding lead.

Statistics after the Jeopardy round:

Jonah 13 correct 1 incorrect
Will 9 correct 0 incorrect
Allison 5 correct 1 incorrect

Scores after the Jeopardy! Round:

Jonah $10,400
Will $4,000
Allison $1,200

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: The Southern Hemisphere; Business Names; Singers On Film; World History; Art & Artists; Talking Hot & Cold)

Allison was in a distant third, but she made things very interesting when she doubled up through DD2. She got to DD3 as well, but an incorrect response left her in third place going into Final.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Will 19 correct 0 incorrect
Jonah 20 correct 4 incorrect
Allison 11 correct 3 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 15 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Will $16,000
Jonah $12,800
Allison $6,000

Jonah and Will were correct in Final; this makes Will your new Jeopardy champion. He’ll be back Monday to defend.

Tonight’s results:

Allison $6,000 – $6,000 = $0 (What is)
Jonah $12,800 + $12,800 = $25,600 (What is In Cold Blood? Happy birthday Ethan!)
Will $16,000 + $9,601 = $25,601 (What is In Cold Blood???) (1-day total: $25,601)

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • I think that Allison made an excellent bet on DD3; had she been right, it would have guaranteed her the lead, while an incorrect response guaranteed that she would not be out of contention for victory. Well done.
  • I have said this before and I will say it again: it is incredibly disrespectful behavior of the show towards its home viewers to include a picture clue instead of text in a wordplay category where actually viewing the text is critical to getting the clue correct. The fact that the show has now done this more than once is completely unacceptable of the show.
  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Will $16,000 Jonah $12,800 Allison $6,000)

Allison: You have to be correct to win—you might as well go all in here. (Actual bet: $6,000)

Jonah: I would limit my bet to $799 or less here to keep Allison locked out. (Actual bet: $12,800)

Will: Standard cover bet over Jonah is $9,601. (Actual bet: $9,601)

  1. “What is ‘In Cold Blood’?” I’ve never read it, but I’ve heard it discussed.

  2. It was the first and only book that came into my mind. What a chilling book!

  3. Easy answer today. They like to reference that book and author. Been a frequent subject on J! Then there’s the irony of one of the movie adaptation’s stars.

  4. I definitely had a “what else could it be…that’s my guess” moment because I knew the book was from 1966. I wasn’t confident, but it was the only book I could come up with that fit the clue.

  5. Thinking of a book based on actual events written around then (turns out it was 1970), I said “Bury my heart at wounded knee”

Andy. When you saw the “answer” (clue) totoday’s daily double, “What is ‘In Cold Blood’?”
may have come to your mind immeidately, and, thought “what else could be?” is great for you, and, anyone whose mind read the “answer” clue, and, also came upwith the correct response.
Me, I believe that I remember reading “In Cold Blood” years ago. Thw only Capote work I think I’ve read. But for whatever reason, mymind just didn’t register that fictionalized account of the Kansas murders, and, the year 1966. Nobody’s fault but mine.

    • The “book about the murdered Kansas family” is what quickly came to my mind but I was immediately doubtful that I would be able to come up with the title (or author, as that will sometimes help me think of the title) fast enough. Fortunately it turned out that I COULD think of them quickly.

  7. Will got a bit lucky after leaving DD3 on the board when it was the only clue below the top row. That sort of mistake could bite him if he makes it again.

As for Final, swing and a miss for me. Only thing I could think of was “Silent Spring”.

  8. Robert J. Fawkes | May 10, 2024 at 6:48 pm | Reply

Actually read it in or around 1966, so it was easy to come up with today’s final.

  9. I have actually never heard of the book in today’s FJ, so therefore I couldn’t come up with the title. 1 for 5 on the week in FJ. Been quite awhile since I could say that.

Retro congrats to Will Stewart on the win. Like EJ said above, Will leaving that DD3 on the board could prove costly if he does something like that again and I hope that he doesn’t.

Have a great weekend everyone! 🙂 And a very Happy Mother’s Day to all of the mothers here.

    • I’ve never read the book either (though I remember it laying around the house when my mother read it when I was a teenager), nor saw the movie (though I think I recall seeing the TV miniseries later), but since this FJ! I have been reading some intriguing comments about how very good the writing was, so I am thinking about reading it now.
