Raiders sweep YSU after Sunday double header

NILES, OH – The Wright State baseball team swept a three-game series at Youngstown State after taking both games of the double-header on Sunday afternoon. The Raiders are now 30-20 on the season and 19-8 in the Horizon League.
 
Game 1 – Wright State 11, Youngstown State 7
The Raiders finished the first game of the day with 11 runs on 12 hits with five walks against their eight strikeouts. They were led by Julian Greenwell, Jay Luikart, and Ben Vore each recording two hits. Luke Arnold, Drew Baker, Carson Clark, Andrew Patrick, Sammy Sass, and Boston Smith all added one hit in the game. Tallying six extra-base hits were three doubles, one each from Luikart, Smith, and Vore, and three homers, one each by Greenwell, Patrick, and Vore.
 
YSU held an initial 4-0 lead after the first inning, but the Raiders were quick to tie the score in the second, beginning with Smith reaching on a double, advancing to third on a Patrick fly out to center field, and scoring on an Arnold sacrifice fly. Fultz reached on a walk, advancing to third on a Clark single, for Greenwell to record a three-RBI homer to right center, tying the game at four. The Penguins added one run in the bottom of the second, holding the lead and adding two more in the fifth, 7-4.
 
The Raiders lowered YSU's advantage to one with a Patrick solo homer in the sixth and Vore scoring on a passed ball in the eighth, but Wright State stayed in the deficit until the final inning. The top of the ninth began with Baker reaching on a single to centerfield and Dane Thomas entering to pinch run, advancing to second on a wild pitch. Clark reached on a walk, with both runners advancing on a Greenwell sacrifice bunt. Thomas scored on a Sass single through the left side, tying the game at seven. Wright State gained the advantage with a Luikart RBI-single to left center, allowing Clark to score. With Luikart and Sass on base, Vore homered down the left field line, taking game one on the day 11-7.
 
Griffen Paige (2-0) was awarded the win after entering to pitch in the fifth, allowing only one run on four this with no walks and three batters struck out in four innings of work. Cam Allen closed the day, entering in the ninth to put in two thirds of an inning on the mound, striking out one batter.  
 
'Guins closer Chris Domke (2-2) was charged with the loss after allowing five runs on four hits with two walks and one strikeout in his one inning of work. YSU finished with seven runs on 13 hits with no walks against their six strikeouts. They were led by Alejandro Covas' three hits for two RBI with one double and one triple.
 
Game 2 – Wright State 10, Youngstown State 7
Wright State finished the second game of the day with ten runs on ten hits with four walks against their nine strikeouts. They were led by Patrick Fultz and Sammy Sass, both recording two hits, followed by Luke Arnold, Drew Baker, Gus Gregory, Andrew Patrick, Boston Smith, and Ben Vore all recording one hit. Their three extra-base hits were made up of a double by Sass, and homers by Baker and Sass.
 
Game two of the day started close, as the Raiders held a one-run advantage after three innings, 3-2. YSU added one run in the first after holding the Raiders hitless to start the day. The Raider's three runs began in the second, as Fultz reached on a single, advancing to second on a Baker walks, and to third on an Arnold walk to load the bases. The first run was scored as Gregory reached on a hit by pitch. The 'Guins regained their lead with a solo homer in the bottom of the second. Wright State added two more runs in the third, with Sass reaching on a double, scoring on a Vore single, advancing to second on the throw. Giving WSU the 3-2 lead, Vore scored on a Patrick single to left field.
 
The Raiders raised their advantage to four in the top of the fourth, as Arnold first reached on a single, advancing to second on a wild pitch, and to third on a Gregory single. Arnold scored as Greenwell reached on a fielder's choice to tag Gregory at second. Sass recorded the first Raider homer of the game, taking a 6-2 lead. Wright State's second home run came just an inning later, as Baker homered to left field, 7-2.
 
YSU began a rally, adding two runs in the fifth, and trying the game at seven in the seventh. In similar fashion to the first game, the Raiders added the final runs of the game in the top of the ninth, beginning with Dane Thomas entering to pinch run after Smith reached on a single. Thomas stole second before Greenwell reached on a hit by pitch. Luikart was walked to load the bases for Vore to record an RBI walk, regaining the Raider lead. Wright State continued, as Greenwell scored on a Patrick sacrifice fly, and Luikart on a Vore single, ending the day 10-7 for the Raiders.
 
Garrett Peters (5-0) earned the win after pitching one and a third innings, allowing no runs with one hit and no walks, striking out two batters. Brayden Schoetzow was awarded the save after closing the game, allowing no runs or hits with one walk and one batter struck out. Starting pitcher Chat Lax put in six innings on the mound, allowing four runs, two earned, on seven hits with one walk and six batters struck out.
 
Aiden English (0-5) was charged with the loss after allowing three runs on two hits in four innings of work. The Penguins finished with seven runs on ten hits with three walks against their nine strikeouts. They were led by Eli Brown's two hits tallying two RBI.
