Under the motto “Birth is respected when you can choose,” will take place from May 13 to 19 World Week of action and dissemination of the rights in force in the Humanized Childbirth Law. From the Ministry of Health of Entre Ríos Activities have been scheduled for the entire month of May.

“This year the motto seeks empower the pregnant person so that you can decide how to go about your comprehensive preparation for motherhood, which It ranges from the choice of the professionals who accompany her to the way of giving birth, and the use or not of medication, among other aspects.”said the person in charge of the Health Division of Women of Reproductive Age of the Maternal and Child Youth Directorate, Carolina Garcia.

Throughout the area, the health portfolio has been developing activities together with the health teams to deepen the work of raising awareness and appropriation of good practices framed in what is established by the Humanized Childbirth Law -No. 25,929- which, among other aspects, protects people when they are going to give birth; contemplates respect for biological times, for the choice to have company during childbirth and to be with the baby from the moment of birth.

Vanina Mildembergerdoctor specializing in gynecology and obstetrics, with more than 20 years of work in the San Roque Maternal and Child Hospital and current technical secretary, pointed out that in this reference center at the provincial level, prior to the enactment of the Law, permission was already implemented so that, at the time of delivery, a family member or close person could enter to accompany. Even, for a couple of years, authorization has also been extended to enter the operating room in case the birth is by cesarean section.

The pregnant person has a voice and votedefines and decides if they want to end their pregnancy by vaginal delivery or if they want to have a scheduled or on-demand cesarean section, when once labor has started, for something that the person considers, believes or desires, they decide that the delivery will be a cesarean section,” he explained. the specialist and highlighted the role of obstetricians who work throughout the entire process. Furthermore, Mildemberger highlighted the importance of promoting breastfeeding from before birth to be able to offer it to the baby during the first minutes of life.

At the San Roque Hospital, the main maternal and child referral center in the province, during 2023, 2,204 births were registered, of which between 55 and 60 percent were by vaginal delivery and 40 or 45 percent by cesarean section. Statistical data indicate that, monthly, between 90 and 130 births are performed, and between 90 and 100 cesarean sections, which makes an average of approximately 200 births per month.

For her part, the graduate in Obstetrics of the Hospital’s Maternity Service Guard, Gisela Fosgtemphasized the need for respect the right to always listen to the pregnant person and the baby that is being born “without unnecessary routines, without unjustified interventions,” Fosgt stressed, and reflected on the need to constantly review practices, since for more than 20 years people have been talking about respecting childbirth and it is necessary to continue working in this regard.

Activities agenda

Argentina has had the Humanized Childbirth Law since 2004, the purpose of which is promote respect for the rights at the time of birth, both of the newborn baby and of the family.

In this sense, the Ministry of Health of Entre Ríos held two virtual meetings in the past few days where members from Region I – representatives of the departments of Paraná, La Paz, Diamante, Victoria and Nogoyá – and from Region IV – from the departments of Gualeguaychú participated. , Gualeguay and Ibicuy Islands – while, during the month of May, continuity will be given to the other regions.

The objective is to analyze and reinforce the role played by interdisciplinary teams of health to guarantee effective compliance with the Law. The experiences of people who go to the services were also presented at the meetings, including a video that compiles testimonies.

In addition, health centers and hospitals throughout the province will carry out activities in their respective areas, disseminating the rights based on the different moments of childbirth, from labor to the postpartum period, to guarantee an accompanied birth free of violence. .

Within the framework of this commemoration, representatives from all the departments of the province will participate on May 15, Federal Meeting organized by the national health portfolio in which the guidelines and updates within the framework of the Humanized Childbirth Week will be presented and the exchange of experiences will be encouraged to analyze the strengths and weaknesses that exist in the different jurisdictions of the country.
