comedies prior to the 80s

REQUESTING

I have an aversion to old movies that I'm really trying to work past, so I'm looking for some good comedies from before the 80s? anything works as long as it's funny (in your opinion)

I grew up watching a night at the opera and while I haven't watched it in years, it's a classic in my family and I do find that funny. but that's where my exposure starts and ends

Blazing Saddles

Why stop there, though, you can’t go wrong with Gene Wilder:

The Producers (1967)

Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory (1971)

Young Frankenstein (1974)

Silver Streak (1967)

The Frisco Kid (1979)

For sure! I could’ve easily listed 15 more, just didn’t want to overload OP. Plus, now other people can comment some good’uns

u/graveybrains avatar

True, but going through the rest of the suggestions I’m worried I’m the only one who liked The Frisco Kid

Dark Star

Fun to pair this with the unused Jerry Goldsmith score version of Alien (1979)

Some Like It Hot by Billy Wilder is from 1959, and is one of the greatest comedies of all time.

If you want to go really old school, Buster Keaton is an icon, and his stuff still holds up. The General is his most famous; Sherlock Jr. is my favorite.

If you like the Coen Brothers, they were heavily influenced by Preston Sturges. The Lady Eve is great. Miracle Of Morgan's Creek is the raunchiest comedy of the Hays Code era.

Ernst Lubitsch is a genius. To Be Or Not To Be is I think his most straight-up funny (as opposed to romcoms that are more romantic, like The Shop Around The Corner). It was remade by Mel Brooks.

And speaking of which, Mel Brooks' classics are mostly 60-70s. Blazing Saddles, The Producers, Young Frankenstein.

Great recs. Spot on about Sturges and Lubitsch.

I watched Arsenic and Old Lace recently and thought it was hilarious.

Some Like It Hot and The Producers (1967), 2 of the funniest flicks ever made.

The Producers (1967)

Sleeper (1973), if you can stomach Woody Allen at this point

Blazing Saddles • Smokey and the Bandit • Monty Python and the Holy Grail • Animal House • Meatballs • The Jerk •

Singin’ in the Rain - 1952

Feels surprisingly modern. Very witty and clever humor.

Harvey (1950). It has some funny lines but is more heartwarming than laugh out loud. It's my personal favourite old black and white comedy.

u/InSooShunt avatar

The Court Jester (1955)

I feel like I'm always rec'ing this one, but it has both physical comedy and word play. Best of both worlds!

Does that movie hold up? I loved it as a kid, but I’m not sure if I would love it now.

Edited

Wise Blood is a great dark comedy/drama. John Waters 70s movies are pretty much all demented dark comedies. Desperate Living is the one without Divine but it’s great.

Daisies (1966) is really fun but also a little more avant-garde and falls more into the comedy/drama than straight up comedy

Oh and the Heartbreak Kid! Elaine May 🩷

The Pink Panther(1963)

Buster Keaton. I know, if you're already averse to old films, the idea of watching silent film is probably not appetizing. But Buster Keaton's stuff doesn't need it! It's basically a slapstick cartoon that happens to feature an actor doing his own ridiculously dangerous stunts. Start with a short film: One Week is a good choice, and its only twenty-five minutes, so you're not sinking a lot of time into trying it out. Since they're in the public domain they can also be found pretty much anywhere!

this sounds interesting!!

A nearly forgotten great comedy is A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1966). Zero Mostel, Phil Silvers Jack Guilford, and the original Great Stone Face, Buster Keaton.
