Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag admitted this 'wasn't an easy season' in an impassioned speech to fans at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

The Red Devils' final home game of the season saw them beat Newcastle 3-2 to keep their hopes of qualifying for Europe via their Premier League finish alive. United remain eighth in the standings but are now level on points with Newcastle heading into the final day, while they also have another FA Cup final against rivals Manchester City to look forward to.

Ten Hag's future has been called into question with United on the verge of recording either their worst or joint-worst finish in the Premier League era, but he thanked supporters for their unwavering support throughout the year in a speech after seeing off Newcastle.

"On behalf of the players, staff and myself I want to thank you all for the brilliant support during the season," Ten Hag began.

"As you know, it wasn't an easy season, but one thing remained constant and that was the backing of you for the team. But this season is not over yet. First, we have to travel to Brighton where we go for three points and then we go to Wembley.

"And I promise you that those players will give everything to get that cup and bring it to Old Trafford. And we are sure you will be there supporting us.

"Thank you, you are the best supporters in the world."

United have to better Newcastle's result on the final day of the Premier League season if they are to at least qualify for the Conference League - Ten Hag's side travel to Brighton while the Magpies head to Brentford.

However, United will enter the Europa League regardless of their league finish if they win the FA Cup next weekend.
