Turner Classic Movies continues its monthlong, Wednesday night spotlight on famous films with one-name titles using the name of a primary character. Tonight’s five titles are all musicals, beginning with the Best Picture Oscar-winning Gigi (1958), led by Leslie Caron as Gigi, alongside Maurice Chevalier and Louis Jordan. Caron also plays the title character, Lili Daurier, in tonight’s next film, Lili (1953), for which she earned a Best Actress nomination. After that is Oliver! (1968), based on the stage musical that itself was an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ novel Oliver Twist; Mark Lester plays that famous orphan here. Next is Roberta (1935), with Helen Westley as Aunt Minnie (aka Roberta), but led by Irene Dunne, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. Finally, Lucille Ball plays Mame Dennis in Mame (1974), based on the 1955 novel Auntie Mame and its 1966 Broadway musical adaptation.

The story picks up as Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) has finally given up on her long-held crush on Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) after hearing his disparaging words about her last season, among a lot of other drama.

Enjoy seven memorable films noir based on literary works, many of which have surpassed their sources of inspiration in recognition and popularity. Up first is Pitfall (1948), based on Jay Dratler’s 1947 novel The Pitfall, and starring Dick Powell and Lizabeth Scott. The next film, the film noir boxing drama The Set-Up (1949), is based on Joseph Moncure March’s 1928 poem “The Set-Up” and features Robert Ryan and Audrey Totter. After that is one of the most famous noir adaptations: the Best Picture Oscar-nominated The Maltese Falcon (1941), based on Dashiell Hammett’s novel of the same name. Writer/director John Huston earned an Oscar nod for his screenplay, while costar Sydney Greenstreet was nominated for Best Supporting Actor. Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor and Peter Lorre also lead the cast. After that is Lady in the Lake (1946), based on Raymond Chandler’s 1943 novel The Lady in the Lake and starring Robert Montgomery (who also directed) as Chandler’s famous detective, Phillip Marlowe. After that, Cathy O’Donnell and Farley Granger lead They Live by Night (1948), based on Edward Anderson’s 1937 novel Thieves Like Us. Next, Barbara Stanwyck plays the title character of The Strange Love of Martha Ivers (1946), adapted from John Patrick’s short story “Love Lies Bleeding.” The movie also features Kirk Douglas in his big-screen debut. Finally, Lana Turner, as one of the screen’s most memorable femme fatales, and John Garfield lead The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946), the most well-known adaptation of James M. Cain’s 1934 novel of the same name.

Prime Video again offers an exclusive live broadcast of this ceremony celebrating the best in country music. This year’s event is being held at The Star in Frisco, Texas, and is hosted for the 17th time by Reba McEntire. McEntire will also be among the performers; other artists who will be taking the stage include Jason Aldean, Jelly Roll, Miranda Lambert, Chris Stapleton and more. Luke Combs leads the field with eight nominations, followed by Megan Moroney and Morgan Wallen with six each, and Stapleton, Cody Johnson and Lainey Wilson with five nods apiece.

Screen icons Henry Fonda (in his final film appearance) and Katharine Hepburn headline this beloved, Best Picture Oscar-nominated 1981 drama. It is a fine swan song for Fonda, who plays a grumpy, retired professor grappling with the effects of aging and estranged from his daughter (played by Jane Fonda, Henry’s real-life daughter). At their summer home on the titular pond, he and his wife (Hepburn) agree to care for the son of their daughter’s new fiancé, and an unexpected relationship begins to bloom. Henry Fonda was awarded his first and only Best Actor Oscar out of two career nominations; he did not attend the ceremony, so Jane, who received a Supporting Actress nod herself, accepted it, as well as the honorary award he was also given, on his behalf. Hepburn, who also was not at the ceremony, was awarded Best Actress, the fourth and final Oscar win of her legendary career.
