We have five days to explore Switzerland, we arrive from a river cruise December 7th in Basel and leave from Basel on December 12th.
Our ideal is Christmas markets and at least one mountain, not sure which one. Considering a day trip
To Colmar as well. We had a plan but have added an extra day so would like some suggestions.

385 helpful votes There are great Christmas markets in Bern and Montreux. And a very pretty buy small one in Luzern. If you were to stay in Bern you would be well placed to visit the other two. Bern is a rail hub and Luzern and Basel and Zürich are all an hour away. Montreux is about 90 mns via Lausanne.

I would not bother with the markets in either Lausanne or Zürich. Have been to them in both and was "underwhelmed". The other places I mentioned have great markets. And Bern would be a lovely place to stay - the architecture in the old town is medieval and gorgeous. 6km of arcaded streets. Plus if you want to visit the mountains you can do so easily from Bern (go to Interlaken Ost and then up to Wengen or Mürren).
