When someone argues "States rights" you just respond "State's rights to do what?" Rights are specific things, not some general term. It isn't unreasonable to ask for specificity.

“You can’t operate a capitalistic system unless you are vulturistic; you have to have someone else’s blood to suck to be a capitalist... You show me a capitalist, and I’ll show you a bloodsucker.”

— Malcom X 1965

The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people. You understand what I'm saying? We knew we couldn't make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did.

John Ehrlichman, to Dan Baum for Harper's Magazine in 1994, about President Richard Nixon's war on drugs, declared in 1971

I think more photos like this should be widely disseminated. People nowadays seem to remember a sanitized version of the civil rights movement and act like it just politely asked to be treated better and then white people said yes and then it was over. I think the average person should see more moments like this and the determined way the segregationists fought to keep things the way they were.

People will point to MLK and talk about his nonviolence and peaceful protests. And yes the man himself was about that. But the people who he was protesting against did not prescribe to that philosophy.

sCarolina articles of Secession specifically whined about states rights. More specifically northern states actually having a say in what happens in their states re: slavery.

That must have been a sticking point. Basically their Constitution was a copy/pasta of the Union one, but the removal of a states Right. You had to allow slavery, and enforce it.
