High school girls track and field: Hornets win 2A Midwest Regional

MOUNT PLEASANT — Salisbury’s girls track and field team doesn’t have a whole lot of “field,” but it’s got plenty of “track.”
Salisbury won three of the four relay events and rolled to the team championship in Friday’s 2A Midwest Regional at Mount Pleasant.
The Hornets scored 80 points with a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 scoring system. The 30 points from the relay victories enabled the Hornets to outdistance their closest pursuers — TW Andrews (54), West Stokes (52.5) and West Stanly (50).
Tai’lah Ward led the charge for the Hornets. She not only ran on two of the relay golds, she took second place in the 200 (26.16) and won the 300 hurdles (50.71).
Millie Wymbs also had a strong meet. She ran on two relay winners, finished second in the 400 (1:00.35) and placed sixth in the 800.
Besides Ward and Wymbs, Salisbury winning 4×400 unit (4:11.46) included Kendall Henderson and Dashia Canada.
The winning 4×200 team (1:44.24) was Ward, Wymbs, Henderson and Skekiya Woodruff.
The 4×100 team that won in 50.27 seconds included Henderson, Canada, Woodruff and Mya Noble.
Athletes who finish in the top four in a regional event advance to state. Canada had a fourth in the 300 hurdles (50.71), while Henderson had a fourth in the 200 (26.63).
Woodruff didn’t qualify for the state event in the 100 or the 200, but she had a fifth and a sixth that added to the Hornets’ point total.
Noble finished eighth in the 100 for a point.
While the Hornets accumulated 77 of their 80 points on the track, they did get three from a field event. Alyrica Abel was sixth in the long jump.
