Abu Dhabi mourns loss of royal family member; crown prince pays respects at funeral

A young Abu Dhabi royal family member, Sheikh Hazza bin Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan passed away on Thursday (May 9), according to the UAE Presidential Court. The cause of his death remains undisclosed. Sheikh Hazza bin Sultan was the son of Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who died in 2019.

The Presidential Court issued a statement that was cited in the National newspaper.

It said, "The Presidential Court extended heartfelt condolences and sympathies on the death of Sheikh Hazza bin Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, praying to Allah Almighty to shower the deceased with His vast mercy, grant him eternal paradise, and provide his family and relatives with patience and solace."

Sheikh Hazza bin Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan was well-known in the equestrian community for his extraordinary skill as a horseback rider. His age was not known to the public.

At Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed the First Mosque, a sizable gathering of Sheikhs and non-Sheikhs said funeral prayers for Sheikh Hazza bin Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Later on Thursday afternoon, they transported him to Al Bateen Cemetery, where he will ultimately rest.

Users of UAE-based social media sites also offered condolences on Sheikh Hazza's passing and expressed praise for him.

The oldest son of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, as well as a number of other members of the governing Nahyan family attended the young royal's funeral prayers.

Among those expressing their sympathies was Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the crown prince of nearby Dubai.

"Sheikhs and worshippers have performed the funeral prayer for Sheikh Hazza bin Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan at Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed the First Mosque in Abu Dhabi, and carried him to his final resting place in Al Bateen Cemetery," Abu Dhabi media office posted on X.
