Emery may have lost Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers for the season

Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers may be ruled out for rest of season in crushing injury blow

Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers could be set to miss the rest of the season with a hamstring injury, according to Injury Expert Ben Dinnery.

The 21-year-old was forced off in the first half of the 1-0 defeat against Brighton, with Matty Cash replacing him.

He has been classed as a “major doubt” for Villa’s upcoming Europa Conference League second-leg clash with Olympiacos, where they will look to overturn a 4-2 first-leg deficit.

Aston Villa will miss Morgan Rogers

Despite only joining Villa in the winter transfer window from Championship side Middlesbrough, Rogers has quickly earned the trust of head coach Unai Emery.

The 21-year-old has already made 16 appearances between the Premier League and the Europa Conference League – 11 in the former, five in the latter – and playing for at least an hour in 11 of those [Transfermarkt].

Rogers’ tally of three Premier League goals in 11 outings may not stand out as particularly exceptional – but what has been impressive is his efficiency in front of goal, averaging 0.27 goals per shot and 0.6 goals per shot on target in the Premier League per 90 [FBref]. Essentially, he is scoring at a rate better than one every four shots and better than one every two shots on target.

For such a young player, he has demonstrated remarkable efficiency in several areas – including more surprising ones such as his long passing accuracy of 85.7 per cent, though he does not play such passes particularly frequently.

Arguably Rogers’ greatest skill is his dribbling ability. He has averaged 2.4 successful take-ons per 90 in the Premier League this season and boasts a take-on success rate of 51.5 per cent – which is strong.

Emery will now be forced to compensate for the absence of a rising young star who was quickly cementing himself as a fixture in the first team.
