Rock guitarist Duane Eddy passed away recently. It you listen to his 1962 single Ballad Of Paladin/The Wild Westerners , a French horn is featured on both sides of the single.
I believe there is some French horn on the Marketts single Out Of Limits, and the album of the same name. Ditto the Lonely Surfer by Jack Nietsche.

Yeah, I though that wasn’t the only occurrence - but Overture was the first example that sprung to mind.

The Does Humor Belong In Music? video shows it. He did studio work on french horn in the 70's Philly soul scene and on a Moody Blues cut from the album Octave before joining Zappa.

Stephanie O'Keefe plays the French horn on this song and others on Spock's Beard's 2006 s/t album.

Willy Ruff on lead French horn, with the late John Pisano on guitar, from 1970's UNDER THE BLANKET.

One of the greatest "one and done" Italian prog bands, Maxaphone, had a French horn player as a member.

If you're into prog, this album has great French horn all over it.

Great melodies and musicianship on this.

  8. I'd love to find the original Italian vinyl version of that! I see that it's quite pricey though... :O(

I'm not sure but (at the) 'Top of the Stairs' has either a FH or Trombone.

I know classical music, especially mid to late 20th century and contemporary classical, tends to be "persona non grata" on SHF, but here are a few pieces that feature French horn that I love.

Elliott Carter - Horn Concerto (2006)
    Charles Wuorinen - Synaxis (2007)
Charles Wuurinen - Horn Trio Continued (1985)
    Krzysztof Penderecki - Sextet (2000)
Magnus Lindberg - Campana In Aria for horn and orchestra (2008)

Of course, these are all pretty "thorny" sounding pieces, so, YMMV.

  15. Australia's most excellent Hunters & Collectors had a French horn playing member. I don't recall any solo work, but I have been wrong before so I'm told on occasion.

The soundtrack music of John Williams is full of French horn. This might be the most effective French horn part ever recorded:

I read a great story about Alan Civil. He was on a train and some young kid insisted on blasting music on his portable player, ignoring requests to stop. Alan got up, reached into the overhead compartment, brought a case down, pulled his French horn out and proceeded to play it. Loudly. The kid got up and went to the next coach to the applause of all the passengers.

A very unique instrument that frequently conveys a whimsical, kind of British sounding mood

the Who's silly but lovable cover of "Bucket T"
Probably played by John I'd imagine

It might be french horn on the chorus of "Tell Me When The Whistle Blows" from Elton John's Captain Fantastic, arranged by Gene Page from the Philly soul era.

Wasnt there a French horn solo in the Theme from the Rockford Files that was a Top 10 US hit in the 70s?

  25. Julee Cruise was a classically trained French horn player before she became a vocalist. Her first recorded vocal appearance was on the soundtrack to Blue Velvet and she plays a French horn solo on the instrumental reprise of Mysteries of Love on that album.
