Tottenham are working on signing at least four players to add depth to their defence amid concerns over Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke explained that the defenders’ injury records, and Romero’s tendency to pick up suspensions, means they will not be able to start together for an entire season.

The former Spurs goalkeeper explained that the club desperately need cover for both centre-backs as well as Destiny Udogie and Pedro Porro.

With Ben Davies often being called upon to fill in across the back four, and Football Insider revealing he will be up for sale this summer, reinforcements will be needed.

Spurs will also listen to offers for Emerson Royal in the upcoming window and Eric Dier will complete a permanent move to Bayern Munich when his loan expires.

Tottenham to target four defenders in transfer window

This claim has come just days after Football Insider revealed that Ange Postecoglou would carry out a clearout at Spurs, with several defenders on the chopping block.

O’Rourke, insisted Postecoglou needs to rejuvenate the squad entirely to improve the strength in depth.

It’s the back four, defensively,” he told Football Insider when asked where Spurs must invest.

Van de Ven and Romero, the cover that they need. Dragusin has come in and we’ve not really seen much of him.

With Van de Ven’s injury record, and Romero’s injury record and suspensions, we know they’re not going to play a full season.

The full-back areas as well.

I think they struggled with Ben Davies at left-back when they played against Arsenal. Bukayo Saka caused him a lot of problems.

When Udogie and Porro are not fit, the strength in depth that they’ve got in these areas, the manager needs to rejuvenate the squad.

He played against Manchester City with four full-backs across the back four. That’s obviously an area of glaring need.
