California’s Methuselah bristlecone pine tree is considered one of the oldest living trees on Earth since it was measured in 1957.

The tree, located in the White Mountains of Inyo County near Bishop, is around 4,853 years old.

The tree was well established by the time ancient Egyptians built the pyramids at Giza.

The trees’ ability to survive in harsh landscapes of freezing temperatures, arid soils and winds is the key to their longevity.

They draw sustenance from most brittle layers of limestone and carbonate rock.

The trees’ roots provide nourishment only to some section of branches directly above it.

If a root dies off due to exposure, only the adjacent segment of the tree is affected, allowing the rest to keep growing.
