ARLINGTON, Texas — A fatal accident in Arlington on Wednesday closed down a portion of Interstate 20 for several hours.
Arlington police responded around 2:39 a.m. to the westbound lanes of 2600 E Interstate 20 Freeway after receiving an iPhone crash alert. Officers found a 19-year-old driving a Nissan Altima who was pronounced dead at the scene, police said in a release. The victim was later identified as Elijah Campbell.
Police learned the 19-year-old victim veered into the right shoulder of the freeway and hit an unoccupied vehicle. The driver was not wearing a seatbelt, police said.
The crash prompted police to shut down two lanes of the freeway from 1:45 to 5 a.m. and two lanes and an exit ramp on northbound State Highway 360 from 5 to 6:30 a.m. All lanes have since reopened.
Arlington police urged all motorists to wear a seatbelt while driving.
"Accidents can happen at any time, often when you least expect it," the release states. "Wearing your seatbelt can reduce the risk of death and minimize the severity of injury after a collision."
