Whether you heard it from a friend, saw it on social media or found out in person, rumors about the Hob Nob Drive-In Restaurant closing on Wednesday, May 15, started wafting like steam from a fryer early this week.

On Tuesday, a server confirmed that today would be the beloved burger joint's last day. However, on a visit yesterday afternoon, the restaurant ran out of burgers at 12:30 p.m., right as mine was set in front of me.  The entire menu was eighty-sixed by 1:15 p.m.

Did I eat Hob Nob's last burger?

"I don't know much about the situation," the server said. "But I have another job lined up, although I'd have to work six jobs to make what I make here."

The Hob Nob has anchored the corner of North Washington Boulevard and 17th Street for 67 years. Its menu specializes in drive-in fare, like this writer's favorite smash burger, onion rings, French fries and chicken fingers.

At lunch on Tuesday, the restaurant was teeming with fans hoping to sneak in one more bite before the restaurant closes its doors.

Hob Nob owner Cary Spicuzza, who owns the restaurant with his wife, Debora Spicuzza, and their business partner, Annette Gargett, told the Sarasota Herald-Tribune this morning that it was time to "stop and smell the roses," but also that they might open a Hob Nob food truck next fall or winter.
