Newsport can reveal there is growing speculation Rachel Brophy’s reign as current Douglas Shire CEO is over with the outcome of this morning's 9am closed meeting likely to reveal it's been agreed or voted on to move her on from the role, or that she has tendered her resignation effective from a future date.

Ms Brophy started her tenure on February 14, 2022.

Ms Brophy has come under extreme pressure the past five months and was widely criticised for a lack of leadership and recovery response strategy following last year’s double natural disaster in the Douglas Shire.

That includes Ms Brophy’s response around solutions to the Noah Range landslide, the Shire’s water issues and a perception of her not being accessible and transparent to Douglas Shire residents throughout her tenure.

Noone Newsport contacted at Council would comment on the specific agenda of today’s closed meeting.

Council is likely to issue a public statement after this morning’s meeting to announce today's development.

Ahead of this morning’s meeting a notice on Council’s website about today’s meeting read:

Notice is hereby given, in accordance with Section 254C of the Local Government Regulation 2012, that a Special Meeting will be held on 14 May 2024 commencing at 9;00am at the Council Chambers, 64-66 Front Street, Mossman.

Business to be conducted at the Special Meeting will be:  Closed session under section 254J(3) of the Loca/ Government Regulation 2012.

The Special Meeting will be streamed live, recorded and published on Council's website for viewing by the public.

Meantime, after a spate of departures, Council is currently looking to recruit a chief engineer, executive manager and general manager who Council said will be recruited to “focus their energies and expertise on disaster recovery”.

10.24am: At a special meeting this morning it was revealed Rachel Brophy has tendered her resignation and her final day at Council will be July 9.

Current staff member Paul Hoye is expected to fill the role from July 10 until a recruitment search identifies a new CEO.
