The Red Lobster in Stony Brook is one of 10 New York restaurants in the seafood chain that have abruptly closed amid the debt crisis bearing down on the franchise.
The Stony Brook location — which shares a Nesconset Highway shopping center with Burlington, Marshall’s, Planet Fitness and Showcase Cinemas, among other businesses — is listed as being “temporarily closed” every day on its website and on its Facebook page.
The closures in New York have come in wake of news that Red Lobster is reportedly considering filing for bankruptcy protection to restructure its debt and close some of its 650 U.S. locations. Dozens of Red Lobsters across the country shuttered their doors on Monday.
Greater Long Island reached out to the Orlando-based chain today for comment but the company had not responded by the time this story was published. There is also no one answering the phone at the Stony Brook location.
A casual dining restaurant chain known for its seafood-centric menu and relaxed atmosphere, Red Lobster opened its first location in 1968 and quickly expanded nationwide during the 1980s. Typically adorned with nautical-themed decor, the restaurant creates an ambiance that evokes the feeling of being by the sea.
The menu at Red Lobster features a wide variety of seafood dishes, including lobster, shrimp, crab and fish. The food item that may be missed most of all are the warm, fluffy and tasty Red Lobster Cheddar Bay Biscuits.
Suffolk County’s three other Red Lobster restaurants — in Copiague, Deer Park and Ronkonkoma — remain open.
