Woman’s Rant Over Loud Women Talking on Flight Has People Cheering

She hit the nail right on the head.

When you're packed like sardines into a tin tube a stuck flying through the air for hours, it's easy to get exasperated with your fellow passengers- particularly the noisy ones. It's why people go absolutely bonkers when a baby cries through a flight, even if people know that they can't help it. Being surrounded by the high-pitched wails of an infant with no way to escape can be sheer torture. Adults, at least, we can count on to quietly listen to stuff on their headphones and keep their conversations down to a low murmur.

Well, that's what I assumed, anyway- silly me. Unfortunately, New Jersey woman Katie Ciottariello's pre-Mother's Day flight experience would suggest otherwise. After enduring hours stuck on a plane with some of the loudest chatterboxes she'd ever heard, Katie had a simple but important message to share:

Perfect- @kayteehugs' four-word message summed it all up. I wasn't there, but I heard the phrase "a flight from Tampa to New York" in conjunction with four loud Brooklynites talking, and I shuddered. How bad do you have to be that even a sweet old man needs to tell you to take it down a notch? And seriously, who calls Brooklyn "Brook?" I still can't believe they talked through the whole flight- actually, even longer, as Katie says she knew they were going to be a problem before they even boarded. I'm a chatty person too, but how do you keep a loud conversation going that long without a freakin' break?

Katie kept her cool and managed to avoid an in-flight altercation, but she hit back at the chatterboxes online with the typical New Jersey attitude, capping off with a curse on their ankles and a Happy Mother's Day message. In response to her angry rant, tons of people online sympathized.

"OMG this is so true!!! Even with my earphones with noise canceling I can hear it in the background, It's low but still," @_nolachick.

One user, @hap_slappy, suggested a way Katie could send a message if she's ever unfortunate enough to find herself in that situation again: "I'd write everything down that they say. All of the important things like dates, times, addresses, numbers... then I'll give them what I've written." LOL! That level of petty will definitely get you in trouble, but I can't help but admire it.

Conversation Etiquette on Airplanes

Of course, this being the internet, there was bound to be at least one naysayer to tell Katie that, actually, she's in the wrong- and sure enough, they showed up right on time.

"If I fly with my friends, I want to talk to them. It's our vacation," @jitsgboys hit back. "It's like sitting on a 2 hour car ride and not talking to each other. If I am sitting next to my husband or friend, I am talking to them."

I don't think anybody's suggesting that the only other alternative is to sit in solemn silence, staring forward the whole flight, and if they are, they're going too far. But you need to maintain some self-awareness if you're going to have a long conversation on an airplane, and means keeping your voices low. To quote Natalie Compton, who wrote about the etiquette of talking on airplanes for the Washington Post:

"A plane is not a private place. It's shared, similar to a doctor's office or a museum. Keep that in mind when talking, and use a hushed voice over a booming one to respect the travelers around you."

Frankly, you should be careful about broadcasting sensitive or private topics like cardiologists, as these women were. Even if you're not revealing health information or other private stuff, though, keep your chats amongst yourselves- it's basic airplane etiquette. If you and your friends' convo are causing the same level of mental anguish to your fellow passengers as a crying baby, you're doing something wrong!
