If you’re up to date on your history, you’ll know that platinum-selling industrial metal outfit Ministry started out as a synth pop venture which unfortunately for vocalist Al Jourgensen, became creatively controlled by his label executives and higher ups at the time. In light of that, Jourgensen would revolt against the band’s 1984 debut album “With Sympathy“, shunning it for decades up until more recent times.
Spurred by his current bandmates taking it upon themselves to rework material from that record in a heavier nature, Jourgensen finally softened his stance on the aforementioned album, which he claims to have burnt the original tapes of in protest. Jourgensen recently discussed his change of opinion on that effort via this interview with Rolling Stone, describing the new versions of several “With Sympathy” tracks as sounding like “arena-rock songs.”
In addition to having re-recorded these new versions for an upcoming release, yesterday, May 11th saw many of the tracks from “With Sympathy” and its 1986 follow-up “Twitch” performed live for the first time since the mid 80s.
With Charlie Clouser (ex-Nine Inch Nails, etc.), cellist Tina Guo and violinist Mia Asano sitting in, the band took to the stage for that special set at this year’s ‘Cruel World‘ festival in Pasadena, CA.
