3 plead guilty in Brooklyn mass shooting, receive sentences

Two juveniles and a person who just turned 18 who were charged in connection with the Brooklyn mass shooting entered guilty pleas to various charges, 11 News learned Monday morning.

Two juveniles who pleaded guilty to first-degree assault and a minor in possession of a gun received a five-year prison sentence followed by five years of supervised probation.

To date, five people were charged in connection to the July 2, 2023, mass shooting that left two people dead and 28 others injured.

One of the juveniles is a 15-year-old who arrested in July in connection with a handgun violation. Attorney Warren Brown represents the suspect.

“I did advise him to take the plea. We talked long and hard about it, where there was a possibility that we could win, but there’s a possibility we could lose as well, and if we lost, he would face a significant amount of actual jail time,” Brown said. “So the hope is that this will have such a greater impact that he will never find himself in this situation again.”

Police arrested a third individual in August and recovered a Smith and Wesson 40-caliber handgun. Ballistics revealed the gun was fired six times in the 800 block of Gretna Court, authorities said.

Police said investigators later determined through ballistics that the weapon, a Glock 17 9-mm handgun, was fired 13 times at the lower stair area leading to a parking lot in the 800 block of Gretna Court.

The 18-year-old suspect who entered a guilty plea to a minor in possession of a gun received a one-year sentence followed by two years of supervised probation.

According to the statement of charges read in court, witnesses observed the 18-year-old pull out a firearm from a bookbag and started flashing it around before the shooting. He was injured in the shooting, but his bag and gun were not recovered. At the time, 11 News reported that his attorney alleged the weapon was a prop gun.

In March, a judge decided to split the case into three separate trials.

Two other suspects were charged in connection with the investigation: Aaron Brown, 18 of Baltimore, was charged on Aug. 30, and Tristan Jackson, 18, of Baltimore, was arrested on Aug. 16.

A hearing is scheduled for June 7 to determine if those defendants will make a plea or go to trial.
