Let’s Go Rajikon Shopping! – A Guide to RC Shopping In Tokyo, Japan

Shopping for radio-controlled (RC) vehicles in Tokyo, Japan, can be an exciting experience, given the city’s vibrant culture and enthusiasm for technology and hobbies. We were fortunate enough to travel to Japan twice in 2023 and, of course, we just had to swing by a few RC shops while we were there.

One thing you’ll notice when browsing the stores in Japan are that you are definitely not in the States any more. The usual names that we see on store shelves are mostly there, but the ratio heavily favors Japanese brands for sure. Of course, Tamiya, Kyosho, Yokomo are the headliners, and as far as accessories, parts and tools are concerned, there are many brands that aren’t offered at your local shops. KO Propo, Futaba and Hitec are all popular, as are Sanwa, Hudy, MST and HPI Racing, too.

It’s also impressive to see just how many parts and accessories each shop carries, especially considering their limited showroom space. Online shopping, while gradually becoming more popular, isn’t as big as it is in the States, so brick-and-mortar shops still get heavy foot traffic. We went to these shops mid-week and saw plenty of customers picking up parts and other RC goods. The selection at these shops is incredible to say the least.

If you get the chance to visit Japan, we urge you to visit an RC shop or two. Here are a few considerations to be aware of if you do. While many stores in Tokyo have English-speaking staff, it’s helpful to learn a few basic Japanese phrases or use translation apps to enhance your shopping experience. Phrases like “excuse me” and “how much is” are useful. Look those up online or on Google Translate before you head out. Also, be aware of local regulations regarding the use of RC vehicles in public spaces. Cities like Tokyo have specific rules to ensure responsible and safe RC vehicle operation.

Shopping for RC vehicles and accessories in Japan is an eye-opener. Whether you’re a novice or an experienced enthusiast, you’re likely to find a diverse range of options to satisfy your RC cravings. Here’s a guide that covers a trio of shops that we stopped by on our last trip to help you navigate the world of RC in Tokyo.
