Erling Haaland’s second-half double and an astonishing save from substitute goalkeeper Stefan Ortega to deny Son Heung-min gave Manchester City a 2-0 win over Tottenham and put Pep Guardiola’s side on the brink of a record fourth-successive Premier League title.

City went into Tuesday night’s game needing a win to go two points ahead of Arsenal for this weekend’s final round of fixtures, with the Gunners holding a superior goal difference.

FWA Men’s Footballer of the Year Phil Foden went closest in the first half, forcing Guglielmo Vicario into a fabulous reaction save after he volleyed Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s horribly sliced clearance goalwards.

Vicario excelled himself again early in the second half when he pushed a rasping Kevin De Bruyne strike around the post.

But De Bruyne assumed his usual role of provider in the 51st minute. Cristian Romero botched a challenge on Foden, whose overhit cross foul Bernardo Silva. In a very familiar City move, Silva slotted a pass to the underlapping De Bruyne and he drove across goal for Haaland to tap home.

The moments after they took the lead were bruising for City, first as Pape Sarr trod on De Bruyne's ankle before Romero clattered into Ederson trying to connect with a back post cross. It persuaded Guardiola to replace both players and Ortega unexpectedly grabbed centre stage.

Twice he spread himself to deny Tottenham sub Dejan Kulusevski at close quarters before what might be remembered as the defining moment of the season arrived in the 86th minute.

The otherwise immaculate Manuel Akanji misjudged a risky chipped pass from Rodri and Son darted through on goal. Fans of all persuasions in north London held their breath and the South Korea superstar blinked, with Ortega thrusting out his right leg to expertly keep out a tame finish.

City made sure of the points when Pedro Porro brought down De Bruyne's replacement Jeremy Doku in the box after a sublime Foden pass. Haaland crashed home his 27th of the season. City can now win a final-day Premier League race for the fifth time when they host West Ham. Arsenal will welcome Everton and hope for an unexpected twist.

Did Son Heung-min end Arsenal’s Premier League title bid?

If Arsenal fans could have picked any Tottenham player to be going through on goal with this match in the balance, it would surely have been Son. The Spurs captain has scored eight times in his career against City, including in each of the first four wins his club claimed on this ground against Guardiola’s side. 

When Akanji let Son through on goal, the City manager collapsed in anguish on the sidelines. He’d seen this film before.

“I had problems with my back and that position is better,” Guardiola joked afterwards. “Do you know how many times Son punished us in the last seven or eight years, with Harry Kane? Oh my god. I said, ‘No not again!’ But then Stefan made an incredible save because he has this talent. In the one-against-one, he is one of the best 'keepers I have ever seen in my life.”

For all the hundreds of millions spent by City during the Guardiola era, it is their backup goalkeeper — signed on a free transfer from Arminia Bielefeld — who has brought them to the cusp of history. Kyle Walker compared Ortega’s save and the technique he displayed to spread himself and deny Son to Manuel Neuer. 

The German keeper will have designs on matching his illustrious compatriot at the top of the game.  There is a new contract offer on the table from City, but No. 2 goalkeepers this good do not stay No. 2 for long. Ortega has replaced Ederson due to injuries four times during games this season, showing incredible temperament along with skill. He was similarly outstanding when thrust into an Anfield cauldron after half time in March.

As for Son, he hasn’t handed Arsenal the title. Not quite. But whenever the league has been on the line going into the final day of a Premier League campaign, the team on top has prevailed. Ortega has put City in the box seat.

Ange Postecoglou interview shows Fury at Spurs’ anti-Arsenal spectacle

Much mirth was made in the build-up to this match over Spurs fans wanting City to beat their team for fear of handing the title to bitter rivals Arsenal. It was dream fodder for internet memes. The game itself was played out amid a subdued atmosphere, unlike those in which City had previously faltered in north London. After Haaland’s penalty, home and away fans sang “Are you watching Arsenal?” in unison.

All fun and games, right? Not as far as a seething Ange Postecoglou was concerned.

"I think the last 48 hours have revealed the foundations are fairly fragile. Outside the club, inside the club, everywhere,” he said at his post-match news conference. "It has been an interesting exercise. It's just my observations. I’m not going to tell you more. You can make your own assessment of what happened. I’ve obviously misread the situation in terms of what is important in the side's endeavour to become a winning team.

"I just want to win, I want to be successful at this club. That's why I was brought in. Other people, what their priorities and interests are, I have zero interest in. I know what's important to build a winning team, and that's what I want to concentrate on.”

Postecoglou added: "It is what it is, I can't dictate what people do. They're allowed to express themselves however they want. But when we've got late winners in games, it's because the crowd has often helped us. The last 48 hours has revealed a fair bit to me. That's alright, it just means I've got to go back to the drawing board with some things."

90th minute: Penalty to Manchester City!!!! Haaland flicks inside, Foden hits a lovely raking pass to Doku, whose feet are too quick for Porro. Haaland to take. There will be 10 minutes of stoppage time after this.

88th minute: What an incredible moment. Under normal circumstances, this stadium would be a cauldron now. But these are not normal circumstances. For all their hundreds of millions spent, has a free transfer from Armenia Bielefeld just won them the title.

86th minute: A GARGANTUAN SAVE FROM STEFAN ORTEGA!!!!! Akanji gets into a complete mess and Son goes streaking clear, completely through on goal. Surely he has to score?! But no, Ortega makes the save. Guardiola is down, flat on his back.

84th minute: A lovely slick passing move from City, the sort they've seldom managed tonight. Gvardiol gets caught in two minds, though, sizing up the show before under-hitting his pass to Doku. Skipp replaces Hojbjerg for Spurs.

81st minute: Foden looks to release Haaland, it's cut out and Spurs can attack. This is getting more frantic than City will be comfortable with.

80th minute: Hesitation from Ortega and Kulusevski gets to a long ball into the City box ahead of Dias. The goalkeeper denies him again, though, and City get rid of the rebound.

78th minute: Johnson wins another corner off Doku. Spurs definitely not going quietly here. It's taken short to Kulusevski, who is given far too much room on the edge of the box but fires over.

74th minute: Johnson looking to get in behind but the ever-imperious Akanji is having none of it.

72nd minute: The other sub gets involved at the other end. Doku twists towards Porro, who deflects his cross behind beyond the far post.

71st minute: Ortega right into the action! Kulusevski scampers through a couple of challenges in the City box but the replacement goalkeeper stands firm to make an excellent save.

68th minute: Ortega is on for Ederson, who has a touch of the Bentacurs and kickoff on his way off. It's probably for his own good. Doku replaces De Bruyne, the other of City's walking wounded.

66th minute: We're back underway. Ederson is carrying on for now but Ortega is stripped and ready. If you weren't tense enough there's going to be absolutely loads of stoppage time here.

64th minute: Ederson is sitting up. There will be a concussion check. And probably one with more medical veracity than Dias staring into his eyes and slapping him on the neck a couple of times.

63rd minute: Romero is booked. His leg missed Ederson but his hip clattered into the Brazil goalkeeper's head. The medical staff are going to work. It looks like Stefan Ortega will be replacing his injured teammate for the forth time this season.

62nd minute: Spurs fling the ball into the box. Oh. Oh dear. Romero goes flying in and clatters hard into Ederson. The City goalkeeper could be out cold here.

61st minute: Maddison jinks into the City box and wins a corner. Walker glances clear.

60th minute: De Bruyne limping very heavily but it looks like he'll try to continue.

57th minute: Sarr treads on De Bruyne's heel. Ouch, that's a sore one. Haaland looks on with particular concern. He wants his assist guy in top condition.

56th minute: Bentancur kicks lumps out of the dugout. He's furious to have been replaced. He played well, but if Spurs are going to qualify for the Champions League they have to win this game.

55th minute: Postecoglou with an attacking change as Kulusevski replaces Bentancur, who was booked in the first half for going in much harder on Foden than Romero bothered to on the goal.

51st minute: GOOOOOAAAALLLLL!!!!!!! Erling Haaland!!!!

Who else? City come forward on the counter and Foden's cross scoots all the way across. Silva picks up the pieces and threads a ball into the channel for De Bruyne, who's delayed his run. They've done that move a million times. The same applies to Haaland, who taps home form a De Bruyne assist.

51st minute: Son cuts inside, he's scored against City from here before but this time Dias blocks.

49th minute: More joy down the City left for Johnson, whose low cross finds Son. City's old tormentor can't lift his attempt over Ederson.

47th minute: Another wonderful save from Vicario! De Bruyne takes aim from just outside the box and that's destined for the bottom right corner but the Spurs keeper has other ideas.

Kickoff: 2nd Half

Off we go again. The biggest 45 minutes of the season?

Halftime

That's the last action of the half. Postecoglou taking a leaf out Guardiola's old playbook and going strikerless has caused City problems. It means Spurs are lacking cutting edge but they're also keeping most of the action away from their own half. City have now played nine halves of Premier League football at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium without scoring.

45th minute: Rodri's just honked one out of play. Collector's item. Now a scramble in the Spurs box as Van der Ven blocks from Haaland and Dragustin denies Silva in the goalmouth. Ah, the offside flag was up.

43rd minute: De Bruyne's delivery is a waste and Vicario claims easily. Spurs can break, Bentancur's through ball is cut out by Gvardiol. Now City again but Silva's cross is poor and deflected back to Vicario.

42nd minute: Porro the latest player to subject Foden to some heavy-duty treatment and City have a free-kick on the left flank, about 25 yards out.

38th minute: City work their first effective attack for a while to the right. Walker crosses to fellow full-back Gvardiol, who volleys over on the angle. The Croatia youngster is in goalscoring form at the moment but Haaland is furious he did not get that knocked back to him in the six yard box.

36th minute: Bentancur walloped into Foden a few moments ago. The referee played advantage but he comes back now to book the Uruguay midfielder.

34th minute: The corner drops to Son, who slices his shot so badly it ends up being a pass back out towards Madison. De Bruyne challenges the England midfielder and it's a goal kick. Hmmm, looked like a corner that.

33rd minute: Johnson engineers a yard of space outside Gvardiol and Ederson fumbles the ball behind.

32nd minute: Dias passes it out of play under minimal pressure again. I'm sure Guardiola has killed for less.

31st minute: Rodri and Silva snap into a couple of second balls. But Spurs hold their shape, force City back and Dias passes the ball out of play. The champions unable to find their rhythm so far.

27th minute: Johnson with a teasing ball into the box for strikerless Spurs and Dias can only dab it behind.

25th minute: Romero looks to thread a champagne through ball for Son but a sprawling Dias reads his intentions.

24th minute: Bentancur scampering, his cross towards Johnson is cut out by Gvardiol, who then thwarts Spurs' second wave and comes away with the ball.

19th minute: Son plays a lovely pass with the outside of his foot for Hojbjerg to run onto. The midfielder lacks support though and Akanji shuts the door. At the other end, Dragusin and Van der Ven manage to do likewise on Haaland.

17th minute: Back come Spurs, who bundle their way through some passes outside the City box. Sarr fires it to Johnson and Gvardiol blocks his cross behind.

16th minute: Incredible save from Vicario to deny Foden! Hojbjerg slices his clearance horribly. Foden is alert and catches it sweetly but that's a magnificent reaction save from the Spurs goalkeeper.

15th minute: Dias gets up with Van der Ven to meet Foden's corner and it's deflected just wide. Vicario fails to claim the next one but Kovacic shovels it out for a Spurs goak kick in any case.

14th minute: Walker with so much room again. Hojbjerg clears behind but the cross should have been much better. 

13th minute: Rodri tries the Walker pass again. He's onside this time but it's a little heavy and he can only pop it out for a Spurs throw. Now Van der Ven makes a well-judges challenge on Foden.

8th minute: Rodri sends a pass beyond Spurs' high line and Walker is on his bike. The touch isn't brilliant, De Bruyne has a shot deflected behind and the offside flag goes up. Nevertheless, it's a clear warning over what City will try to do with the space in behind.

7th minute: Spurs get a couple of bites at the corner and the attack ends with a towering defensive header from Haaland.

6th minute: First chance falls to Tottenham. They've started well. Hojbjerg switches play wonderfully to Johnson. He edges into the box and sets it back to Bentacur, who forces Ederson to push a well-hit shot over. 

3rd minute: Ohhh, Romero goes to ground and Haaland briefly looks to be in before Spurs get the free-kick. The Argentina defender might have been touch fortunate there.

2nd minute: It's a different setup to usual from Spurs. Son and Johnson are in the wide attacking positions, with Maddison and Sarr the furthest forward centrally.

Kickoff: 1st half

Spurs get us underway. De Bruyne effectively leads the City press to win the throw-in.

4 mins before kickoff: Here come the teams. City two wins from glory, Spurs needing a win to stay in the Champions League hunt. Arsenal praying their sworn local enemies can do them a favour. Buckle up.

20 mins before kickoff: Speaking to Sky Sports before kickoff, Postecoglou did not entirely rule out switching to a back three, which could happen with Romero, Dragusin and Van der Ven all in the line-up. The latter could also start at left-back. He did pledge his usual non-negotiables of high-pressing, hard-running and a desire to take the game to City. There could be fireworks coming up.

40 mins before kickoff: Mateo Kovacic was an unheralded signing from Chelsea last June but the Croatia midfielder has become quietly influential for City during this run-in. Guardiola famously turns towards the players he trusts the most when each season reaches its conclusion and Kovacic can unquestionably put himself among that number. The 30-year-old has started five of City's past six games, with the odd-match out in that run the 2-0 win at Nottingham Forest where the champions improved markedly after his halftime introduction.

Kovacic grants Rodri a little more attacking license and, alongside the talismanic Spain star. he and Bernardo Silva will be charged with giving Guardiola his cherished "extra pass" tonight as City aim to starve Ange Postecoglou's enterprising team of possession.

55 mins before kickoff: Three changes for Tottenham, including Radu Dragusin into the backline and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to add a little midfield ballast.

1 hour before kickoff: The teams are in. City line up with the XI that played the bulk of the 4-0 win at Fulham, with Kyle Walker in for Nathan Ake. The Dutchman is fit enough to return to the bench, as is Jack Grealish.

1 hr 15 mins before kickoff: Confirmed team news will be with us shortly. You can rest assured the Spurs one won't feature Bryan Gil in goal, Alan Sugar or the late Bill Nicholson. Not sure what on earth I'm talking about? Well, it's been an online trend for Spurs fans to put together novelty lineups for this one that would assist a heavy City win. Perish the thought they give Arsenal a strong helping hand towards the league title. Make no mistake, Ange Postecolgou and his players will be going all out to keep their hopes of Champions League qualification alive, but it could make for an unusual atmosphere.

1 hr 40 mins before kickoff: Arsenal's nervy 1-0 win at Manchester United on Sunday ensured this title race will go all the way to the wire. Tonight's outcome will decide who has the advantage on the final day. If City win, as they always do during the run-in but almost never do at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, they will be two points clear heading into their final match at home to West Ham. Arsenal host Everton on Sunday and will be a point ahead if Spurs win this fixture for a fifth season in a row. Neutrals might root for the draw, which would leave Arsenal ahead by three on goal difference and the top two having to go all out to out-score one another at the weekend.
