New Delhi: Out on bail for medical grounds, former Lava International  managing director Hari Om Rai allegedly sent an impersonator at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for a medical check up for extending his interim relief.

An accused in a money laundering case probed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Rai was arrested 10 October last year in connection with its probe into Chinese smartphone manufacturers. He had filed an application before the Delhi High Court seeking extension of his bail granted on medical grounds, claiming that he suffers from cardiac ailments.

However when ED officers reached AIIMS to supervise the process 17 May, they learnt that another person, identified as Naval Kishore Ram, underwent an echocardiogram (done to assess the heart’s function and structures) instead of Rai. The ED then informed the Delhi Police, which arrested the imposter.

Rai had sent Ram for another test in March and showed the medical record as his own, according to the FIR lodged in this connection.

On Friday, the FIR was lodged against Ram, Rai, his son Pranay, Dr. Shravan Kumar Azad of Vasant Health Centre, among others for criminal conspiracy, forgery, and cheating. In related developments, Hari Om Rai is now back in judicial custody.

According to the FIR, Rai was granted three-month interim bail 16 February on medical grounds. After he requested an extension, the Delhi High Court ordered a medical examination to be conducted and its report be submitted before the bail ends 17 May. ThePrint has a copy of the FIR.

“Hari Om Rai didn’t appear at AIIMS. Subsequently, the police officer contacted the mobile number (given by Hari Om) for coordination. The recipient introduced himself as Pranay Rai, son of Hari Om Rai, and informed that Hari Om is on his way and will reach AIIMS soon. However, despite waiting for one hour, Rai didn’t present himself at AIIMS,” the FIR said.

Subsequently, the ED sent a follow up mail to Rai for his medical check up. However, a message was then received from the same number, saying he was unwell and was under doctor’s care. The ED was also informed that Pranay was available with the original documents from the AIIMS and other hospitals and that Rai was trying to come over for the check up.

A third email was sent about the medical check up. On 16 May, when the ED officers reached AIIMS, they were informed that Rai was being examined. When asked to identify himself, the accused identified himself as Rai.

On being asked, according to the FIR, Ram stated that Dr Azad instructed him to take the documents, including the court order to AIIMS, of Rai to get free treatment. Further, he was allegedly taken there by an associate of Rai, it added.
