A stage adaptation of the 2005 film “Good Night, and Good Luck” will premiere on Broadway. Academy Award winners George Clooney and Grant Heslov, who wrote the movie’s original screenplay, will adapt their drama for the stage. Directed by Tony Award winner David Cromer and starring Clooney, the play will open at a Shubert Organization-owned theater in spring 2025. “Good Night, and Good Luck” will be produced by Seaview, Sue Wagner, John Johnson, Jean Doumanian and Robert Fox.

“Good Night, and Good Luck” chronicles the battle of real-life CBS journalist Edward R. Murrow in exposing the lies and corruption of senator Joseph McCarthy’s communist investigation. The play’s title refers to Murrow’s famous on-air signoff. In the film version, Clooney played Murrow’s CBS colleague Fred W. Friendly. For the Main Stem mounting, Clooney will portray Murrow, a role that was portrayed on-screen by David Strathairn, who received an Academy Award nomination for his performance.

“Edward R. Murrow operated from a kind of moral clarity that feels vanishingly rare in today’s media landscape,” said Cromer in a statement. “There was an immediacy in those early live television broadcasts that today can only be effectively captured on stage, in front of a live audience.”

Clooney is a two-time Academy Award winner. He won in 2005 as Best Supporting Actor for his turn in “Syriana” and again as co-producer on the 2012 Best Picture winner “Argo,” an honor also shared by Heslov. Clooney has received six additional Academy Award nominations, including dual nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Director for “Good Night, and Good Luck.” Clooney’s television work includes a five-season tenure as Doug Ross on “ER,” a role which earned him two Emmy Award and three Golden Globe Award nominations. Clooney is a 2022 Kennedy Center Honoree.

“I am honored, after all these years, to be coming back to the stage and especially, to Broadway, the art form and the venue that every actor aspires to,” Clooney said.

Production timeline, theater, additional casting and creative team for “Good Night, and Good Luck” will be announced.
