D-Day: 80 Years On

This year marks 80 years since the famous D-Day landings on the beaches of Normandy, which led to the retaking of continental Europe by the Allied forces.

Much of the operations for this pivotal moment in World War II were planned here in the borough by Generals Bernard Montgomery and Dwight Eisenhower, and presented to Winston Churchill and King George VI.

To commemorate the historic anniversary, an event is being held in the gardens of the former St Paul’s School in Hammersmith Road on Saturday 8 June, where Operation Overlord was finalised.

There will be a range of activities to get involved with including historical re-enactments, military vehicle and weapons displays, live wartime entertainment, army personnel and cadet stands, and historical information displays from the 1st Battalion London Guards, Medical Units and Cadet Forces.

Old Paulines will man a stand with Pauline photos, memorabilia and artefacts, alongside a stand showcasing WW2 history and videos provided by a military historian.
