Solomon Kane (2009) Movie Ending Explained: Created by Robert E. Howard in 1928, M.J. Bassett’s 2009 action-adventure film “Solomon Kane” features James Purefoy and Jason Flemyng. The story revolves around the great warrior Solomon Kane, who refuses violence in order to stay away from hell. The film itself is very engaging, and the set design is very profound, to be frank. However, the cast seems to have lost their track in the middle of the road. In the grand tapestry of a war movie that features an iconic character like Solomon Kane, the villain should have been presented in a more intriguing manner, as his part in the film is very little, and the climax seemed a bit rushed.

Spoilers Ahead.

Solomon Kane (2009) Plot Summary and Movie Synopsis:

The film starts with Solomon Kane attacking a fort and killing hundreds of men until he enters the castle. Later, he emerges into the throne room, where some mysterious long mirrors stand around the place. Creatures from inside the mirrors start attacking Solomon’s men while he is pushed inside the final place. When he enters the room, he is confronted by a demonic entity called the Devil’s Reaper. Solomon feels the temperature of the room going down drastically while the Devil’s Reaper confronts him with his dark presence.

The Devil’s Reaper tells Solomon that his life is owed to evil, and now he has come to deliver Solomon to hell. At one glance, Solomon sees the horrifying life in hell where abundance and torture is the prime objective of the ruler. So, despite submitting himself to the Devil’s Reaper, Solomon decides to attack him with his utmost willpower. When he realizes that the Devil’s Reaper is too powerful for him to confront, he jumps out of the window and escapes from his wrath. Thus, Solomon Kane is lost to the Devil’s Reaper as he waits for him to commit a sin so that he can return for his soul.

How does Solomon Kane end up Meeting Meredith?

One year has passed since his interaction with the Devil’s Reaper. Solomon now seeks sanctuary in a monastery where he is learning sorcery and other magical staff to divert himself from violence. He has sought peace amidst the chaos to refrain from killing any other human being as he now knows that if he kills someone, the Reaper will eventually come looking for him to enslave his soul in hell. However, the abbot dreams of a prophecy where he is obligated to expel Solomon Kane from the monastery so that he can find his own path.

Solomon does not expect this as he has given all his wealth to the monastery and its people, but since the abbot orders him to go away, he goes on a journey. He meets with death, life, happiness, boredom, and everything along the way until, one day, he is confronted by a couple of thugs who hit him in the back of the head. Solomon does not fight back because he believes in peace now more than anything in the world. The thugs make him unconscious. He is later discovered by the Crowthorn family.

When he regains his consciousness, Solomon meets with Meredith who takes the responsibility of healing him. In the meantime, Solomon learns more about the Crowthorn family and how they have submitted themselves to believing the norms of the new world where Christ forgives all sins. With Meredith’s constant care, Solomon soon regains his strength, and she even makes new clothes for him as well. With time, Solomon starts growing a feeling for the Crowthorn family because of how they perceive him with the utmost kindness.

How do Malachi’s Men Kidnap Meredith?

One morning, while they are moving from one place to another, Solomon sees numerous people lying dead while their eyes are completely burnt. A child is left behind, and the family takes care of him. Later that night, when the child is questioned by William Crowthorn about what actually happened in that place, he says that the villagers decided to burn a witch. But the witch killed them all. Listening to this story, Solomon has his own suspicions, and he asks the boy to wear a cross.

Suddenly, the boy leaves a mark on Meredith’s hand, saying she is the chosen one, and returns to its original form. It is no child but the witch herself who attacks Solomon and then flies away, turning into numerous bats this time round. The following morning, the Crowthorn family is attacked by Malachi’s men, who have been transforming men from villages across the land to follow Malachi. The sorcerer’s right-hand man, the Masked Rider, has the power in his hands to transform any man into believing in Malachi’s vision.

When one of these men tries to kill Meredith’s younger brother, Solomon tries to stop them without any violence. But the Masked Rider infuses the idea inside the attacker’s brain that Solomon must kill him to save Meredith’s brother. Since Solomon has taken the oath of not killing a single soul, he fails to kill that man, which results in Meredith’s brother’s death. Later, Solomon takes the sword and starts killing those men while Masked Rider successfully kidnaps Meredith. William tells Solomon that he believes if he rescues Meredith, the Devil’s Reaper will stop hunting him as his soul will be purified.

Is Meredith Alive?

Solomon starts fighting against Malachi’s men around every corner of the country, but he fails to find Meredith. Meanwhile, he meets a wild priest who tells him about Malachi’s followers and how they have destroyed everything. Soon after, the priest shows some people who have turned into flesh-eating creatures and tries to feed Solomon to them. Solomon somehow manages to escape only to meet with Malachi’s followers. Solomon kills two of them and asks the survivor where they have taken Meredith. The survivor says with confidence that she’s dead as Kane throws him to the creatures to feed.

Solomon later ends up drinking at an inn because he feels like he has failed his purpose, and the Devil Reaper is coming for him because he has killed many men. However, soon, he is confronted by one of his old shipmates, who recognizes him and now wants him to lead a resistance against Malachi. Solomon disapproves of the proposal when Malachi’s men, led by the Masked Rider, attack the inn. They crucify Solomon along with the other resistance leaders.

Right at this moment, Meredith passes the location inside a cage and sees Solomon being crucified. She screams at him multiple times from the cage and soon Solomon realizes that she is alive. They share a glance, and Solomon believes that he can still save her. Solomon frees himself from the shackles, and before Malachi’s men can kill him, Solomon’s old shipmate arrives along with his men. Later, Solomon, after the healing is done, agrees to support the men who are willing to put forth the resistance against Malachi.

How does Solomon Kane Escape the Death Reaper?

Solomon learns that Malachi now stays at Axmouth Castle, which really surprises him because his father used to be the lord of that castle. Solomon left home when he was very little. His father gave all the realm to his older brother Marcus. On his way out, he saw Marcus trying to force a woman, and he tried to stop him. Accidentally, Marcus slipped and fell from the cliff. Solomon left his home, knowing that he had killed his big brother.

Since it’s Axmouth, Solomon remembers the hidden path to enter the castle without forcing themselves in. When he enters the castle, he opens all the cages to set everyone free. During this time, he meets with his father, who has been a captive for a long time. His father, Josiah, tells him that Marcus did not die. But since he was in a serious condition, when every healer failed, he called Malachi, who was a sorcerer back then. He made a deal with the devil to save Marcus’s life. However, Marcus changed drastically and became Malachi’s right-hand man – the Masked Rider.

Knowing that Malachi would never let him go, Josiah begs Solomon to kill him and sets him free. Solomon reluctantly kills his dad, and right after that, he goes on to confront Malachi. He finds Meredith locked up, and just as she warns him about the trap, Marcus stabs him from the back. Then, Solomon tries to talk to Marcus, but he is totally in Malachi’s control and fails to understand anything. Solomon ends up setting Marcus on fire and killing him with his sword.

Malachi tries to use Meredith’s blood to summon a demon who will capture Solomon’s soul, but Solomon manages to kill Malachi, who closes the portal. Later, the demon’s soul passes through Solomon’s inner self, taking away all his past sins and turning his soul into its purest form. Both Malachi and the demon get sucked back inside the portal as Solomon wakes up and tells Meredith his soul is redeemed as he is able to save her. At the end of the film, we see Solomon burying his father and brother and making sure that Meredith is back to her mom. Solomon later decides to keep fighting the evil around the world as the Demon Reaper has stopped chasing him once and for all.
