New player need help :D

Hello everyone, as the title I am a new player who has recently started to become passionate about this game. I have a lot of experience with RTS, yet I can not get into the flow of battle in this game, especially to manage the different troops in combat and the launch of a thousand spells available. I was wondering if you had any suggestions, for example on time management (gia 1x is too fast) or a sensible keybinding.

Basically I can not be organized and control the battle and I seem to be at the mercy of events and this thing causes me pain.

Thank you!

Try using the grouping mechanic and use it to send orders to whole groups or select a lord/hero faster

Dont be afraid to pause for a second to issues commands or use spells. This will also help with getting an overview which will develop into a skill to just read the battle later on.

Also keep in mind that some factions need a lot more micro management than others. Vampire coast was a management nightmare in the beginning for me but then I warmed up to their battle style and now it works fine.

Figure out which faction and difficulty feels good and aim for that.

Trust the process, have fun and remember... Skulls for the skullthrone :)

Grouping is ctrl+number

I typically group my army’s based on what units I use the most. I make an exception for the main infantry line bc if I have it at the back I forget about spell casters sometimes.

1- Lords/units that can take on whole units. 2-monster infantry/damage dealers etc. 3-main infantry line w spell casters. 4-cavalry 5-flying units

Go to key bindings and swap P and Space, I find this really helpful to easily pause.

Old comment about keeping oriented and using unit cards & groups to keep track of everyone

I think the issue is that you know what to do, it just doesn't apply to TW as cleanly. Think of the battle map in TW3 like you would a game map in say SC. There's just no mining resources or upkeep, that's separate. BUT the fighting is kinda the same. You should be looking around the map the same way you would look at a RTS when your fighting.

  1. There are 3 main areas to pay attention to. Front Line, Mid Range and Long range. There are other zones, but for me these are the big ones. Organize your unit cards based on these zones. Lords and Heroes are first, Then FL, MR, and LR. Then I got further. 1 of those other zones are flankers. if my FL has flankers they go to the back of my FL stack. If they are missile cav, they go to back of my MR, LR usually stays put. This way when battle is happening I don't have to search through all 20 units to find my swordsman, I know he's right behind my spearmen in the unit cards.

  2. Treat your unit cards like you do the map in GTA. Every second or two I glance down at my unit cards if i feel like i can't/haven't seen them for awhile. You might think your pistolier is safe cause you told him to run somewhere, only for some hounds or a stalking unit to start picking them off.

  3. USE THE PAUSE button. Treat it like foot ball. I tend to think of my unit placement before we start like I was lining up a team in football. Then I pause and figure out what to do. I'll pause again when we are halfway from the enemy and then I pause in combat, I'm not that good yet that I can do it in real-time, but I'm working on it.

  4. TWH is relatively realistic in that if a unit is behind a tree, the most of the arrows will hit the tree. You may do chip damage cause reasons but I've watched my artillery hit trees cause I had it in the woods thinking I was being slick. If you see something in real life that would stop a projectile, like a rock formation than it probably will.

  5. Find a base faction. Study their attributes, even play with them. Then pick another faction and compare their stats, this gives you a good idea at what a faction is good at.

I'm not that good, I lose all the time. When I try to follow YTers it never works. These tips helped me

Thats nice, thank you!

I used to play Xbox almost exclusively so I find using a keyboard really difficult. I just keep one finger over the pause button and do everything using the mouse 😅 and I have good success with battles. Of course, if you're playing on legendary I don't think you can pause and you might just not want to. I would also say that some factions require more key presses than others. If you have lots of abilities and spells or have a faction like slaanesh that focuses on kiting/ hit and run tactics then it's harder than a faction like dwarves who are more static.
