Lenny Kravitz on the biggest misconception of his career: 'I think a lot of people don’t realize that I write it all, produce it all, and play it all'

When he played at Paisley Park he played the guitar solo to one of his own songs in the complete wrong key. Prince made him immediately go into the studio to re record it for the live dvd.

Prince was a mad man. Rains on the Super Bowl. “Can you make it rain harder” despite it being dangerous with the electric on the stage

Playing an outdoor show in the rain isn’t unusual. You’re more likely to slip and fall than be electrocuted. Stage (anything out in the open) equipment is made to withstand rain. It would be stupid if it wasn’t.

u/IShookMeAllNightLong avatar

Which is what the production manager was worried about in his head he said in a later interview. The dancers were wearing something crazy like 6" heels, and he was afraid they were going to get hurt.

u/WillieIngus avatar
Edited

If Prince was wearing 6 inch heels in the pouring rain and slipped he would just do a Bollywood style backflip and keep performing

One of the greatest shows my band had on the Warped tour in 2002 was during a hurricane and pouring rain, outdoors.

u/S4T4NICP4NIC avatar

My man, you can't just toss out being on the frickin' Warped tour and not at least give us a hint

STICK 'EM UP!!!!!

I saw y'all that year. Very entertaining .

A few years later I joined WT as a roadie. Fun times.

Not everything will withstand the rain. The keyboard players keyboards quit by the end of the song. Ruined from the rain.

But it still happens. Like Ace Frehley

u/S4T4NICP4NIC avatar

lmao What is this argument. Dude, that was almost fifty years ago. That's like saying cars are unsafe because Uncle Gary drove a fucking pinto back in '76 and it caught fire on the way to the liquor store.

The solo was amazing and I can’t imagine how challenging it would have been to play, slippery when wet and all. Did he tear his earphone out while he was playing or did I imagine that?

u/BroccoliFartFuhrer avatar

I am not exactly a Prince fan but goddamn did that halftime show leave my jaw on the floor. I watch it once a year to remind myself how good it was.

u/s0ulbrother avatar

Those dancers were insane on stage. 8 inch heels, slippery tiles, nah that’s nothing.

Greatest half time show ever - it was amazing

I saw the police play a show in Ohio when they got together again after so many years of not being a band together. And Andy Summers played the solo to a song in the wrong key and stayed in that wrong key through the entirety of the solo. At the end of the song sting announces on the mic, gesturing to Andy "the great Andy Summers everyone!".....

All I remember about Lenny is his dick comes out of his leather pants when they split semi frequently.

We know Lenny, it just isn’t very good.

It ain’t over was an amazing album. Are you going to go my way was alright but had all the big pop hits. Really haven’t listened to his stuff after that…

This. It ain’t over was full of bangers. But most folks don’t know about his early work I guess.

Yes! Let Love Rule had a couple gems (Mr. Cab Driver), but It Ain't Over was one man's plea to get his wife back (granted Lisa Bonet and he were both addicts at the time), but I think it spans the rock genre with great ballads and fucking jams. It felt honest as hell. Are You Gonna felt like it was made to go big and be pop at it's best but if you haven't, give It Ain't Over Till It's Over, the album a listen. So many greats (What Goes Around, Mama Said, etc.).

u/Ok_Adhesiveness_9565 avatar

Always On the Run is one of the most underrated songs in rock and roll history (just my opinion). Power and funk with that iconic vocal delivery.

u/DutchMaple1 avatar

Love playing that and several others on guitar. I feel like a rock star

You definitely know Fly Away, Again, and American Woman. If you don’t know Let Love Rule you should.

u/Bebopdavidson avatar

These are the songs that make people think he doesn’t write and play his own stuff. No one would think Are You Gonna Go My Way was written for him by someone else.

It Ain't Over Til It's Over is also a great song itself. You can really feel the heartbreak in that one. When I was a kid I used to assume it must be a Motown cover or something, it sounds so classic.

Mama Said may be his best.

u/BellyMind avatar

Are you talking about Mama Said? Just want to make sure I am not missing a release.

Well.

The Guess Who wrote American Woman, Lenny.

Yea Lenny, I’m still mad that you played one song at the Horde fest at Texas motor speedway a long time ago when rusted root played, you walked on stage in all this fur shit, in Texas Summer, played one song, then said “f-this it’s too hot” and then walked off the stage….

In his defence, it was too hot for fur.

He chose to wear it though. It’s on par with any celeb going on Hot Ones and not expecting spicy wings…

u/SmokeEveEveryday avatar

Wait you mean like DJ Khaled??

u/HookerDoctorLawyer avatar

His favorite workout outfit too hahah

We’ve seen what happens when his pants aren’t of a certain material strength

I was at that half time show, at the Grey Cup in Toronto. My sister & I were selected to dance on his side stage on the field. We had a close up view

Yeah, he did that to me too in New Jersey years ago. The Black Crowes played a killer set, Lenny comes out in a purple suit and halfway through the third song he walks off. Band looked around, finished it up and that was it. Drive safe. Dick.

I saw them on this tour. Lenny played guitar with his jacket in-between his hand and the strings. He quit early, because rain was coming in. If memory serves, this was right around the time that The Phantom Menace came out.

He learned his lesson in subsequent years and aired it out onstage that time.

And Guess Who's version was so much better.

The Kravitz version got way too much play on Canadian radio when I was growing up since it met the content requirements with the lyrics and music written by Canadians.

u/AShitty-Hotdog-Stand avatar

Same thing happened here in Mexico.

The Kravitz cover was one of those songs like "The Scientist”, "The Reason", “You’re beautiful", or “Like a Stone”, that got played to death on the radio.

u/forever_wow avatar

Had no idea Canadian radio had requirements on minimum percentage of songs that must be from Canadian artists.

In my defense there's no reason I would ever have pondering anything at all about Canadian radio regulations.

u/comped avatar

Ironic considering the new-ish lead singer is from Thunder Bay.

“Oh yeah, give me The Guess Who. They have the courage to be drunken buffoons, which makes them poetic!”

Genuinely one of my least favorite covers of all time.

I have a visceral reaction to that piece of shit.

u/knowsguy avatar

Yeah, wow. Kinda big hit for him. He didn't have that many, strange he'd forget.

I served with Prince. I knew Prince. Prince was a friend of mine. Lenny, you're no Prince.

u/S4T4NICP4NIC avatar

Oh, fucking nice. Going deep into the back catalog for that one.

More replies
u/Earthpig_Johnson avatar

It’s because no one should be allowed to be that fuckin cool.

I didn’t know anybody didn’t like Lenny Kravitz. It’s not my choice of music but he definitely has talent and a real understanding/appreciation of his craft. He seems like a cool, genuine guy.

u/durtmagurt avatar

I went through a phase of forcing myself to listen to albums for multiple runs regardless of I liked it or not. I was doing a lot of driving and standing around.

I chose a few Lenny albums (love revolution and Circus). Holy shit did I just not like them. I made 2 run through a both (at the request of a friend) but I’ve been done with Lenny ever since.

We don't hate him per se, we hate his narcissistic attitude.

u/Paridisco avatar

He just seems like he wants his flowers.

Y’all really loose with the word narcissist nowadays. Acting like he saying he’s a god and worship him

u/S4T4NICP4NIC avatar

Y’all really loose with the word narcissist nowadays

I'm surprised nobody has brought up the word gaslighting yet.

Gaslighting isn’t real, you’re making that up. You’re just confused.

It's kinda ironic that the general population/fans create these "monsters" and then get pissed off at their creations.

I think the fans of entertainers push the entertainers over the edge in a lot of cases. It's not normal or healthy to treat human beings as if they are better than or above most other human beings, simply because they have a unique talent. The stalking, admiration, praising, along with the wealth, literally drives people mad.

It's gotta be a shitty feeling when you reach the height of your dreams, obtaining the thing you committed your entire life to achieving, and then after you reach those goals, you realize it's not what you thought it would be. That's got to be a large reason entertainers go through bouts of depression and self-medicate.

That last part is what ultimately ended Kurt Cobain, in my heart of hearts.

More replies

Y’all hate him because he’s talented and disgustingly good looking. As is his entire family and every woman he’s been with.

Nah, it’s his attitude.

Dang, what did he do? I feel like I’ve missed something with all these people hatin him

As one critic put it "Lenny Kravitz has built a career writing songs around riffs that Jimi Hendrix would have thrown away".

Nice work if you can find it. Unfortunately there's only room for Lenny... and Greta. ;)

u/kingdazy avatar

I'm sure you've heard a version of it, but the full quote, and relevant to this is: "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness"

Whose “quote,” though? Is that actually a “full quote” of somebody, or just another one of those internet things where somebody added a phrase then declared it the “real version?”

u/Enm305 avatar

That's an Oscar Wilde quote!

Apparently it’s usually attributed to him, but it was around before him, and was an expansion of the original “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.” But that all happened before the internet, if this is accurate:
