SRH vs PBKS: Abhishek Sharma breaks Virat Kohli’s eight year-old IPL record

SRH opening batter Abhishek Sharma surpassed Virat Kohli’s eight-year-old feat of smashing most sixes in a single season of IPL by an Indian batter having smashed 39 sixes so far in the ongoing season.

SRH batter Abhishek Sharma broke star India and RCB batter Virat Kohli’ eight-year-old record in the Indian Premier League as he registered the most number of sixes in a single season of the tournament by an Indian player. The 23-year-old achieved the feat during his team’s clash against PBKS in Match 69 of IPL 2024 at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad.

The southpaw surpassed Kohli’s feat with a maximum against Rishi Dhawan in the sixth over of the second innings over long-on. Courtesy of his 82-metre-long hit, Abhishek registered his 39th six in the ongoing season and left behind Kohli’s tally of 38 sixes in the 2016 edition.

After losing his opening partner Travis Head on the very first ball of the innings, the Punjab-born cricketer took the onus upon himself to get his team off to a flying start and notched up a half-century off just 21 balls. He was eventually dismissed for 66 off 28 balls with the help of five fours and six sixes in his innings and left SRH on 129/3 after 10.1 overs chasing a massive score of 215.

During his innings, Abhishek also breached his best-ever runs tally in a season of 426 achieved in the 2022 edition. The SRH opener has now scored 467 runs from 13 innings at an average of 38.91 and a sensational strike rate of 209.41. Along with his 41 sixes, the southpaw has also scored 35 fours and notched up three half-centuries in the season.

Kohli closely following Abhishek

In the ongoing season, Abhishek has formed a formidable opening partnership with Travis Head as the duo has mercilessly thrashed the bowling attacks of the opponent. Meanwhile, Kohli is closely following Abhishek to reclaim his feat having smashed 37 sixes in the ongoing season from 14 matches and will be raring to go as RCB prepare themselves to play in the Eliminator game.

The RCB opener has looked in imperious form this season being the highest run scorer with 708 runs to his name from 14 innings at an average of 64.36 and a strike rate of 155.60 with one hundred and five fifties to his name.
