Barclays missing from Rich List in Channel Islands

Sir Frederick Barclay and his family do not appear on the Sunday Times Rich List this year as the there was not enough "robust financial data" to estimate their wealth, the man who compiles the list has said.

The Brecqhou-based family has been a fixture on the list for years due to its business empire, which has included household names such as Littlewoods and the Telegraph.

Robert Watts, who compiles the list, said there was "a lot of noise" in the data about the Barclays so they "don't feature this year".

Instead, whisky magnate Glenn Gordon and his family have been named as the richest people in the Channel Islands, after being second placed last year.

Mr Gordon, who runs William Grant & Sons, is worth £5.6bn with his family, according to the list.

The company, which makes drinks including Glenfiddich, Balvenie and Drambuie, is the third largest scotch whisky manufacturer in the world according to Scotch Whisky Industry Review.

The Gordon family, who live in Jersey, have increased their wealth by more than £1bn since last year, the Sunday Times said.

Jersey's Chris and Sarah Dawson of Plymouth-based The Range are in second place and worth £2.5bn, up nearly £500m since last year.

Jersey's Simon Nixon of Moneysupermarket is in third place and is worth nearly £1.9bn.

Guernsey's richest family are Douglas and Dame Mary Perkins of Specsavers in fourth, with a total wealth of more than £1.5bn.

Guernsey-based financier and Bristol City FC shareholder Steve Lansdown is fifth on the list and is worth £1.16bn.

How much are the top five worth?

  1. Glenn Gordon and family (£5.619bn)

  2. Chris and Sarah Dawson (£2.5bn)

  3. Simon Nixon (£1.88bn)

  4. Douglas and Dame Mary Perkins and family (£1.587bn)

  5. Steve Lansdown (£1.168bn)

The Rich List reveals the wealth of the 350 richest people in the British Isles in 2024.

A total of 165 billionaires were recorded in the UK, down 12 from 2023, the largest fall in the billionaire count in the guide’s 36-year history.

The list shows the combined wealth of UK billionaires is more than £795bn - a sum larger than the annual gross domestic product of Poland.

Mr Watts said: "This year’s Sunday Times Rich List suggests Britain’s billionaire boom has come to an end.

"Many of our home-grown entrepreneurs have seen their fortunes fall and some of the global super rich who came here are moving away."
