Q&A
Why is it ok to satirize Brown’s story? What’s so funny about a white man going to great lengths to ease the pain of the oppressed? I think it’s because Brown had lived and died for racial justice. In our time, even though legal discrimination has ended, people don’t put praxis into effect. They march, wear t-shirts, read literature on being an ally, and then go back to their segregated all white neighborhoods. For a man in the 1800s, John Brown was ahead of his time in many ways. Maybe the Good Lord is popular because deep down inside, many folks, liberal or conservative, think Brown did too much for people of color. That’s just my take on it.
