PARIS — Paris Saint-Germain managed to halt their four-game winless streak by securing a hard-fought 2-1 win against Nice in the French league on Wednesday.

After suffering three consecutive defeats, including losses to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League semifinals, PSG was in dire need of a win. They narrowly escaped a defeat at home against Havre with a stoppage-time goal in the previous match.

Despite the absence of their star striker Kylian Mbappé due to a hamstring injury, PSG dominated the early stages of the game against Nice. Goals from winger Bradley Barcola and 18-year-old defender Yoram Zague put PSG 2-0 ahead in the first half. Nice’s forward Mohamed-Ali Cho managed to pull one back before halftime, but PSG’s defense remained resolute.

The match took a turn when Nice defender Melvin Bard was sent off in the 75th minute for a foul on Barcola. Nice’s defeat dashed their hopes of finishing in fourth place and competing in the Champions League qualifiers. However, the home fans still showed their support as Nice secured fifth place and a Europa League spot for the upcoming season.

In the other match on Wednesday, Marseille missed out on an opportunity to join Lens and Lyon in the race for sixth place after a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Reims. Reims took the lead in the 33rd minute when a cross from Japanese winger Junya Ito found the net through an own goal by Marseille’s Chancel Mbemba.

It has been a challenging season for Marseille, especially away from home, as they continue to struggle to secure positive results.
