THE SIXTH SENSE

Part of 1999

A good ghost story sticks in the back of the craw like few other narrative endeavors, and THE SIXTH SENSE so captured a moment of pre-millennium tension that it’s bolstered the career of writer/director M. Night Shyamalan to this day. He serves up Philadelphia gothic with a game cast who mesh with the tone of the story effortlessly. The sad tale of a lonely boy who sees beyond the veil of this life remains a triumph of restrained horror and exceptional twists and turns, and Bruce Willis and Haley Joel Osment are good together in ways that yield multitudes.

“An entrancing film, which dabbles in profound character revelation and the paranormal – something you don't often see in a movie. And the 11-year-old Osment evokes the boy's terror and awful predicament so memorably, you'll never forget him.” —Desson Howe, Washington Post

“To watch the movie today is to reaffirm how smartly made it was, and how influential it has become to a generation of suspense and horror movies following it.” —Chicago Tribune
