Dearest readers: It’s Bridgerton Week at IndieWire. We’re celebrating the new season by diving deep on one of the best romance shows on TV.
Season 3 of “Bridgerton” promises everything audiences love about the show: gossip, gloves, and games. This season finally focuses on the romance between Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin (Luke Newton) which isn’t an easy road because there’s someone else in the mix, Lord Debling (Sam Phillips). Other storylines include Francesca Bridgerton’s (Hannah Dodd) introduction into society which she doesn’t take too well.
A longtime series writer, Jess Brownell, steps into season three’s showrunner shoes and brings back a mix of old favorite characters into a greater spotlight and new characters to come in and shake up society. Here’s all the actors who are main players and who they’ll be playing in season 3.
Newton with Colin’s big glow up in season three is about to be the new “Bridgerton” lust object of the season. Before that he was known for Disney Channel’s “The Lodge,” a show about a teen girl who takes over her grandfather’s lodge and becomes friends with the teen staff.
Finally! It’s Coughlan’s time to get her leading romantic role in this season as Penelope. Coughlan was previously best known for her role on the long running, beloved “Derry Girls.” But she was also seen in “Harlots” and most recently the wonderful “Big Mood.”
Phillips plays the third in the Penelope and Colin love triangle this season as the non-sentimental Lord Debling. He’s had a long career in British television but people may know him best for playing the Queen’s Equerry Stephen Chambers in “The Crown.”
Jessie has long played Eloise in “Bridgerton” but after she finds out that Penelope is Lady Whistledown the former best friends are estranged, giving each other longing looks all season that might rival some of the series’ great romances. Before this Jessie has had roles on some great British shows like “Doctor Who,” “Lovesick,” and the TV miniseries “Vanity Fair.”
Dodd’s Francesca has always been around in the “Bridgerton” series, but this season puts Francesca to the forefront as she’s put out on the marriage market. But Francesca handles being put on display very differently from her outgoing siblings. Dodd takes over the role from Ruby Stokes, who previously played Francesca. Dodd has been in a couple other Netflix vehicles, “Enola Hughes 2” and “Anatomy of a Scandal.”
Madsen plays Cressida, who is one of “Bridgerton’s” more conniving presences. This season she’s hell bent on ruining Penelope’s romantic chances while wanting to secure her own. The bigger development is her becoming friends with Eloise. She’s also known for her role in the 2019 horror film “Leatherface.”
Munemi plays Lord Samandi, one of the men who are vying for Francesca’s hand in marriage. He’s had roles in “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” and most recently joined Coughlan in a few episodes of “Big Mood.”
Alli plays a long anticipated Bridgerton character this season, John Stirling, and a romantic interest for Francesca. The relatively unknown actor has had small roles in “Belfast,” “The Man Who Fell To Earth,” and “Death on the Nile.”
Gemmel has long played Violet Bridgerton on the series, aiding and abetting her children into marriage. This season, she seems perplexed by Francesca’s unwillingness to play the game. And the widowed Lady might even see a bit of romance herself. In her long career, Gemmel has really done it all with roles in TV shows like “EastEnders” and “Penny Dreadful” to starring in the 1997 film “Fever Pitch” alongside Colin Firth which was later remade in 2005 starring Drew Barrymore and Jimmy Fallon.
Lady Danbury’s brother comes to stir things up seemingly to her dismay. And a meet cute with Lady Violet Bridgerton seems ready to heat up the second part of the season. Francis has been seen in “The Wheel of Time” and “Small Axe. “
Imhangbe has been on previous seasons of “Bridgerton” playing Will Mondrich who is a boxer who owns a local gentlemen’s club that the Bridgerton men frequent. This season he and his family join the social stratosphere after their son, Nicholas, inherits everything from Lady Kent. Imhangbe’s biggest role to date is in “Bridgerton.”
Naomi has played Alice Mondrich alongside Imhangbe for several seasons. This season Alice alongside her husband figures out her new role in society, especially that among the other women in society. “Bridgerton” is currently her largest role to date.
New brings some fresh blood to “Bridgerton” this season as Lady Tilley Arnold, a totally hot wealthy widow who shakes up society with her new ideas and a romance with Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson). She’s previously been seen in Starz’s “Black Sails.”
