As May progresses, Northwest India is gearing up for a fresh spell of heatwave conditions, according to the latest weather forecast from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Scorching temperatures are expected to grip the region from May 16 onwards.

IMD Heat Wave Alerts For Multiple States

The IMD has issued heatwave alerts for the following states:

  • West Rajasthan: May 15 to 18
  • West Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, East Rajasthan, and South Haryana: May 16 to 18
  • East Uttar Pradesh: May 16 and 17
  • Northwest Madhya Pradesh and Bihar: May 17 and 18

Additionally, hot and humid weather conditions are likely to persist in Saurashtra and Kutch over the next five days.

According to reports, heatwave conditions will intensify in the northern plains, including Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi/NCR, with temperatures peaking between May 17 and 19. The mercury is expected to reach 44°C in many areas, potentially triggering 'loo' conditions. Cities such as Amritsar, Jalandhar, Bathinda, and several others are likely to be affected, with some regions potentially recording temperatures above 45°C.

The national capital, Delhi, is poised to experience its first heatwave of the season, with temperatures expected to reach 44°C, according to the IMD forecast.

While North India grapples with the heatwave, South Peninsular India and parts of East and Central India are anticipated to witness a wet spell. These regions are expected to experience isolated heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds until May 17 (South Peninsular India) and May 14 (East and Central India).

The Southwest Monsoon is forecasted to advance into the South Andaman Sea, parts of the Southeast Bay of Bengal, and the Nicobar Islands around May 19, marking the beginning of the monsoon season in these regions.

IMD Rainfall Prediction

The IMD also forecasts light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and squally winds in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Maharashtra until May 18. Gujarat, Bihar, and Jharkhand are also expected to see light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms on Tuesday.
