Srinagar, the capital city of Jammu and Kashmir, witnessed a historic moment in its electoral history.

On Monday, the Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency saw a 36% voter turnout. This is the highest turnout since 1998, when there was a lot of fighting in Jammu and Kashmir. This election was significant because it was the first big voting event in the Valley since Article 370 of the Constitution was removed, which took away some of the region’s special rights.

chief electoral officer Pandurang K Pole said that it is the highest polling percentage of almost the past three decades. The better turnout in the region was because things have been getting better overall. There hasn’t been a government elected in the area since 2018.

The number of people voting in Srinagar has been going down since 1996. That year, during the first elections after the insurgency started, the turnout was high at 40.9%. But in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, only 14.4% of people voted. In the 2017 by-election, it was even lower at 7.1%. In 2014, it was 25.8%, in 2009 it was 25.5%, in 2004 it was 18.5%, in 1999 it was 11.9%, and in 1998 it was 30%.

More people voted even in the cities of the Srinagar constituency, where in the past, boycotts were common because of the influence of separatist leaders. This time, there were no calls for boycotts. Earlier, some groups wanted people to boycott elections because they saw voting as agreeing with the region’s status as part of India.

There were no bad incidents reported from any of the 2,135 voting places in the parliamentary seat. This area covers five districts and 18 smaller voting areas. Even though the National Conference and People Democratic Party said the police were bothering people and voting was slow, everything went smoothly.

There were 23 people running for office, but the main ones were Waheed Para from the PDP and Ruhullah Mehdi from the NC.
