One of over a dozen collaborations between one-time Academy president Frank Capra and vaudeville-enthusiast-turned-screenwriter Robert Riskin, this wholesome rom-com finds wealthy, straitlaced bank vice-president Tony Kirby (James Stewart) head-over-heels for his stenographer Alice Sycamore (Jean Arthur), the only “normal” member in her family of eccentrics. What chaos will ensue when the parents meet?! Nominated in seven categories, the film won Best Picture and Directing, turning Capra into a three-time winner in just a five-year period. Much like Capra’s later It’s a Wonderful Life (1946), this humanist tale was lauded for emphasizing the message of the film’s title, and its feel-good afterglow shines on over eight decades later.

DIRECTED BY: Frank Capra. WRITTEN BY: Robert Riskin. WITH: Jean Arthur, Lionel Barrymore, James Stewart, Edward Arnold. 1938. 127 min. USA. B&W. English. 4K DCP.
