The first of 4 appearances on the show in 1996 for Liverpool's Cast.

Sandstorm was the 1st of 7 top 10 hits all of which entered at their peak position.

Sandstorm was a number 8 hit and came from their debut album All Change which contained their first 4 hits - Finetime / Alright / Sandstorm / Walkaway.

We will see Walkaway in March.

Cast were definitely second tier Britpop but they certainly had a few good songs like this one

Cast. Doomed to sit in the long shadow of The La's.

Better than a lot of the Britpop landfill of the period.

Possibly the best Cast single, as already mentioned they are arguably second tier Britpop (alongside Shed Seven), but they knocked out a few good tunes along the way.

There were 2 acts called Solo who had hits in the 1990s - a British act led by Stuart Crichton ( who we recently saw as a member of Umboza ) and this US soul act who were called "Solo US" on British pressings of their records to avoid confusion with the British act called Solo.

Heaven will be their only top 40 hit ( in 2 weeks time ) and this was their only appearance on Top of the Pops

The song was produced by legendary duo Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis who had massive success with artists like Janet Jackson, Alexander O'Neal, Human League, Boyz II Men and many others.

Is it acappella, if there's a bass involved?

Solo never existed and were AI-generated for this repeat. We're all part of a special BBC Four test broadcast.

Normally the reason I have no recollection of some songs from this period is because they are completely bland and forgettable.

This Solo song being a prime example

Not my type of music, but you can't argue that Solo have some vocal talents here. Actually enjoying this

George Michael storms to the top of the chart after selling around 110,000 copies of Jesus To A Child.

George dethrones Michael Jackson for the 2nd time - previously in 1991 with Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me with Elton John.

George will have an extra smile on his face because he dethrones an act on Sony following his lengthy court case against them which he lost.

George first performed Jesus To A Child at the MTV Europe Music Awards in 1994 – the song got its first radio play at Easter 1995 on Capital Radio as part of their Help A London Child campaign – because George was in dispute with Sony and still under contract with them, the song was not released until after Sony sold his contract to Virgin Records in July 1995.

This is the 10th career number 1 for George:

    6 solo

Careless Whisper / A Different Corner / I Knew You Were Waiting For Me ( with Aretha Franklin ) / Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me ( with Elton John ) / Five Live EP ( with Queen and Lisa Stansfield ) / Jesus To A Child

    4 with Wham

Wake Me Up Before You Go Go / Freedom / I'm Your Man / The Edge Of Heaven

Of course he was also part of Band Aid.

Jesus To A Child was George's tribute to his former partner Anselmo Feleppa who passed away in 1993 aged 36.

This was the only week at number 1 for the song .

George did not reveal this during his lifetime, but after he passed away, Childline founder Dame Esther Rantzen revealed that George donated all royalties from the song to Childline

It's a big leap from Wham Rap to Jesus To A Child! Shows how versatile a songwriter George was

JTAC is George's 10th #1, what were the others before this?

Sticking something sharp into my thigh so I don't nod off during George's soporific effort. Don't care if it's heartfelt if it's also dull.

As I said last week, this is one of those records I can appreciate more in my late 30's than I did when I was 10.
