Price Chopper/Market 32 will merge with Williamsville-based Tops Friendly Markets, the two companies announced Monday, forming a grocer with 292 stores throughout the Northeast and 32,000 employees. Details of the merger weren't revealed.

The combined company will be headquartered in Schenectady, and Scott Grimmett, the president and CEO of Price Chopper/Market 32, will become CEO of the combined company. The companies also will share best practices that each has developed, Grimmett said.

Sparrows have their own 'Occupy' movement at the Westmere Price Chopper. Once, the store tried to do something about all the birds flying around the side entrance where the shopping carts are kept, said Tim O'Toole. Someone must have complained and the store had mesh screens installed, only to find out that they could not change overhead light bulbs. So they had to cut and install zippers in the mesh, but the birds apparently figured out how to bypass that, O'Toole notes. (Tim O'Toole)
