Billy Mitchell. Steve Wiebe. Two men that battled for years to be named the best Donkey Kong player in the world, got profiled in the amazingly, somehow-moving documentary The King of Kong, and are now bringing their beef (which Billy will likely cover in his signature hot sauce!) to Denver at 1up's Kong Off 2, one of the country's biggest competitive gaming events this year.
 
In case -- like a master playing early levels of DK -- you have lives, and haven't seen the doc, here's the story: Weibe's the lovable, mild-mannered everyman, and Mitchell's the shady villain who wears American flag ties. When the tourney takes over LoDo's gaming mecca for one nerdy November weekend, though, they'll be joined by 14 other legit contenders, plus the new world-record holder, a (seriously) Harvard-educated plastic surgeon. Gawk as they vie for a new record/ $2k (Guinness Book-like gaming authority Twin Galaxies will have refs on hand), or actually (futilely) toss your hat into the ring at one of the two DK arcades reserved for Wild Card entries, aka anyone off the street who wants to pay $30 for the honor of getting pwnd by the best.
 
It's free to attend everything, but since space will be limited, you should buy a VIP wristband now to guarantee yourself easy access in and out of the venue, just in case the line is somehow not-moving.

Kong Off II - Event Details

The Kong Off 2 will take place on November 16th, 17th and 18th 2012. The event will be held at “The 1up” in the LoDo district of Denver, Colorado. The 1up is an arcade/bar concept that ha 46 vintage arcade games, 15 Pinball Machines and 3 lanes of Skee-Ball. The 1up is located ½ a block from the Home Plate entrance of Coors Field, home of the Colorado Rockies.
 
The event will be hosted by Richie Knucklez (Space Invaders and Pole Position World Record Holder).
 
This event will be refereed by Walter Day (Founder of Twin Galaxies and Official Arcade Scorekeeper).
 
The Kong Off 2 features the world’s best Donkey Kong players going head to head for the title of “Best In The World”. Competition will take place over two days (Saturday and Sunday).
 
To qualify for a “Dedicated Machine” you must have a verified score of 1 million points or better. If you wish to qualify you must either live stream your game or have it verified by an Aurcade or Twin Galaxies referee.
 
The "cut off" to qualify for a "dedicated" machine will be Friday October 19th 2012. We will need a months notice to prepare a cabinet.
 
If you wish to play in The Kong Off 2 and you have yet to score 1 million points, you may play on our “two” “Wild Card” machines. If 10 people enter to play on the “Wild Card” machines, the players will be broken into two groups and five players will play in a rotation on each machine. The cost to enter on the “Wild Card” machines is $30 per player (this includes your gameplay quarters for both days).
 
The Prize Purse for The Kong Off 2 is as follows:
 
1st Place          $2000
2nd Place         $500
3rd Place         $250
 
In addition to The Kong Off competition, we will be offering up $250 “World Record Bounties” to any player that can break/set a world record on any “arcade” game located within The 1up during The Kong Off event. (There must be a current record to break in order to qualify for the bounty)
 
The Schedule of Events:
Friday November 16th: There will be an informal meet and greet at The 1up. This will be a great opportunity to get familiar with the venue, participants and other arcade personalities. There will be great drink specials and very special performance, which will be announced soon.
 
Saturday November 17th: The Kong Off will begin at 10am. The last game to be played by each player that day must begin prior to 8pm. Following gameplay we will be webcasting “Arcade Culture” live from The 1up. It is sure to be an epic show with all of the different personalities that will be on hand for the event.
 
Sunday November 18th: The Kong Off will begin at 10am. The last game to be played by each player that day must begin prior to 6pm. The awards ceremony for The Kong Off will begin around 8pm.

With limited capacity, the venue will be at a "1-in 1-out" scenario for most of the weekend.
