Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz, a candidate for governor of Maryland in 2018, died early Thursday morning after a cardiac arrest at age 60.

A statement from the Baltimore County Government said Kamenetz woke up at his Owings Mills home around 2 a.m. and said he was "feeling ill." He was then taken to University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 3:22 a.m.

Officials with the Baltimore County Government held a briefing at 11 a.m. at the Public Safety Building in Towson on the events surrounding Kamenetz's death.


Kamenetz was a Democratic candidate for the upcoming Maryland gubernatorial race and had served as Baltimore County Executive since 2010.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan tweeted out his condolences on Kamenetz's passing.

He then released the following statement and ordered that all Maryland flags be lowered to half-staff from Thursday through sunset on the day of internment in honor of Kamenetz.

Kamenetz is survived by his wife Jill and their two teenage sons. A number of local officials took to social media to send out their condolences for Kamenetz and his family.
