In particular, the part around 1:04 where the tempo picks up a bit.
That guitar part I swear is a direct rip off from something else.

Dude I know what you mean. It sounds like they use that riff on every "feel good" commercial. So generic.
Anyways, sounds kinda like "Shut Up and Dance" by Walk the Moon. Or some song from The 1975.
The first couple times I heard the song I had the exact same feeling about that part, but after more listens I don't hear it anymore.
Kind of reminds me of a song from the movie Juno maybe...
Kind of late to the party, but I hear a familiar song too,
For some reason I am thinking of a Shrek song, but don't know what. From 0:40 to 1:00 especially when she says "I always thought I would sink, so I never swam"
After a while the most similar riff i could find to this song was Hallelujah! It's a very similar tempo and mellow, when i first heard the song i too thought it was a shrek song, really hope this helps
I'm asking myself this exact question too! Has anybody found out yet?
It sounds like part of a Lene Marlin song but i can't remember which one, will be searching for it later :)
I think i got it... reminds me of Shakira - She Wolf at :32 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=booKP974B0k
I can't be the only one who thinks that the riff in this song sounds just like the chorus in all for you by Sister Hazel. (Chorus at 0:33) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f46ulX6uwGc
It's all i think about when Malibu first comes on.
OneRepublic - I Lived
This is the song I think of when I hear Miley's new song. It's been bugging me for weeks.
That's the song!
I think Malibu reminds me of Marit Bergman and in particular the song "I Will Always be your Soldier" https://youtu.be/Xk-DXfsS_2U
No Hard Feelings, by the Avett Brothers
Trojans by Atlas Genius - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sd2yr12abg8
City Lights by Blanche sounds the most similar .
I spent hours trying to find the answer to hearing part of a different song in malibu. The literal first 4 chords of the song reminded me of a song that was popular 2009-2013 you know, the good era. So i search over and over checking lists of top songs of every year, ending up giving up. I knew this original song was going to be a hip hop ish. After hours, i give you my finished answer. IF WE EVER MEET AGAIN(ft. Katy perry)-timbaland. Both beginnings of the songs sound alike. Thank you
An honest mistake- the bravery ?

Not really...
I've had this problem as well then I was listening to Babylon by David Gray. It just clicked. Listen to both the acoustic versions. There's just something similar about the guitar tunes if you cut out the ukele-esk sounds. Then the way the strings are plucked when they both say the location names. Just my 2 cents. Edit: I also think there's some similarities to Fast Cars by Tracy Chapman
I'm trying to find that another song too! That part form 0:47 to 1:13 is so similar to another song, and that song is in my head and I can't remember single word. Please help.
We Might Be Dead By Tomorrow - Soko
They sound extremely similar...
Holy shit that's gotta be it they're so similar
My buddy thinks it’s from the bravery- an honest mistake.
Any thoughts on that?
Another Story by the Head and the Heart
I know this post is old as hell, but I just realized I hear I Will Follow Him by Little Peggy March.

It sounds like a Sheryl Crow song ut I can-t remember what the name is... I feel like I-ve heard it over decades ago
