Currently, the Miele Boost CX1 emerges as the top vacuum cleaner in the test. This canister vacuum performs well on all types of floors and has tremendous suction power. If you prefer a stick vacuum, then the Samsung Bespoke Jet is the best choice at the moment. A more affordable alternative is the Dyson V15 Detect, but it does not have a mopping function.

Key considerations

What you should know about the different types of vacuums

When it comes to a vacuum cleaner, there are various types to choose from. You may prefer a cordless stick vacuum, a compact handheld vacuum, or a traditional wheeled canister vacuum. But, which model should you buy? That completely depends on your wants and needs, which is why we highlighted multiple types above.

To assist you in choosing the right type of vacuum cleaner, we have created a helpful infographic.

Regardless of the vacuum cleaner model, it is always important to pay attention to the characteristics that you find important. As the above infographic demonstrates, choosing a stick vacuum cleaner can be a smart choice if you are looking for the best lightweight vacuum cleaner, but not if you want to buy the quietest vacuum.

How was the ranking determined?

When we talk about a ‘vacuum cleaner', it's still uncertain which type of vacuum cleaner you have in mind. A cordless stick vacuum, a compact handheld vacuum, or a powerful upright vacuum? Although there are significant differences between the various types of vacuum cleaners, each with its own advantages and disadvantages, the research process for determining the best vacuum cleaner per model is quite similar.

As you have seen above, we have listed the best choices for each type of vacuum cleaner. We arrived at these choices by conducting comprehensive tests on all types of vacuum cleaners. In our tests, we first examine the build quality of the vacuum cleaner: is it made of sturdy materials that can withstand some impact? Or does it feel “cheap”?

Additionally, we evaluate the suction performance. Regardless of the type of vacuum cleaner, we test all models on different types of flooring. We do this in customized floor bins, where we test the vacuum cleaners with various types of dirt. We also consider suction power and airflow, using these data to rank the vacuum cleaners based on their suction performance.

In addition to suction performance, we delve into the user-friendliness of a vacuum cleaner. This includes evaluating the noise level, weight, versatility, and maintenance of the vacuum cleaners.

Once we have obtained a good understanding of the vacuum cleaner's quality, we can match it with the price. Does it offer a good price-to-quality ratio?

For each aspect of our reviews, we assign a rating to the vacuum cleaner. The average rating determines how the vacuum cleaner is ranked within specific research categories! If you want to learn more about our research process, you can read more about how we test vacuum cleaners on our website.

What I would like to point out

When purchasing a new vacuum cleaner and you're not sure which model to choose, it's important to determine exactly what you'll be using it for. Firstly, consider the surface area where you'll be using the vacuum cleaner. Then, you can ask yourself what kind of dirt the vacuum cleaner should be suitable for, such as pet hair, cat litter, or general debris.

By asking yourself these questions, the chances of making a wrong purchase are reduced.

Why you can trust my research?

At Vacuumtester.com I take my vacuum cleaner research very seriously. I have actually tested every vacuum cleaner that I highlight on my platform. After ten years of experience and dozens of gestures of vacuum cleaners, you can accept my unfiltered opinion.

  1. Hey Robbert, I find your graph very interesting. It's just a shame that you left out the robot vacuum cleaner. I'm actually curious if there are “quiet versions” of those too and, if so, what trade-offs are involved. Are they, for example, less powerful?

      Hi Peter,

Thank you for your response! In my graph, I mainly focused on vacuum cleaners that you have to operate manually. The weight of a robot vacuum cleaner, for example, is less important in that case.

Apart from the graph, I can tell you that there are indeed “quiet” robot vacuum cleaners available. In fact, a robot vacuum cleaner is often much quieter in terms of noise level compared to other models. Interested in the best options? Take a look at the guide on the quietest robot vacuum cleaner!

      Greets,

  2. I am searching for the best vacuum cleaner for my house when I came across your

  3. Thanks Sidra, replies like your really keep us going strong!

  4. We need help finding the best vacuum for twice weekly use in a large 10,000 square foot home with a combination of carpet and hardwood and stone floors. We like the flexibility of the lightweight cordless stick vacuum cleaners but have found that they break down within a couple years (or less). The last one Shark Vertex Pro barely lasted a year. We are following filter cleaning instructions. Can you advise on durability of these lightweight options– are they not intended for this frequency of use for the size of space we have. Do we need a different type of vacuum? Any insights and recs are much appreciated.
