I've tested both Dyson Vacuums and I can tell you which one you need © Vacuumtester.com.
The latest Dyson Gen5 Detect has some exciting improvements over the Dyson V15 but costs 49.6% more compared to the (well-tested: 8.1) Dyson V15. If you want the best of the best, go for the Dyson Gen5 Detect ( ~$950) with (a few) cool new laser features.

If you're clever though, go for the Dyson v15 ( ~$635 ), and save yourself $ 315. The Dyson v15 is simply one of the best vacuum cleaners out there with overall good performance. If you're unsure about the V15, check out my YouTube Review (Don't forget to subscribe!) or just buy the thing! Save $ 315, and become the owner of one of the best vacuum cleaners in the US market.

The Gen 5 Detect is the successor to the Dyson V15 Detect. The Gen5 Detect is called the “most powerful cordless stick vacuum” by Dyson. But for what price… Do you pay for this with the extra cost of $ 315 or are the batteries going to end sooner?

I decided to compare the Dyson Gen5 Detect with the Dyson V15 Detect based on all possible info. In this article, I list the most significant differences and similarities.

This Dyson Gen5 Detect vs V15 post is completely updated in August 2023.

Dyson Gen5 Detect vs V15: The Biggest Differences

Let's start with the most significant differences between the new Dyson Gen5 Detect and the previously launched Dyson V15 Detect.

I would like to emphasize that I have extensively tested the Dyson V15 Detect, on the Gen5 I use the data that is available at the moment and as odd as it sound: test results from other experts in the market.

Accessories: Fluffy Optic floor brush and integrated crevice tool

There is a big difference in accessories. The Dyson Gen5 Detect is equipped with an integrated dust brush and crevice tool. When you remove the vacuum cleaner rod from the Gen5 Detect, an extendable dusting brush appears. This is not the case with the Dyson V15 Detect.

And that's not the only difference: the floor brush is also different. With the Dyson Gen5 Detect you get the new Fluffy Optic floor brush. Like the Fluffy floor brush of the Dyson V15, this one has laser technology. However, the laser lighting is placed lower in the floor brush, so you can detect up to twice as much dust on the floor. Is that the main thing that's worth the $ 315? A different laser?

The Gen5 has different buttons compared to the V15.

If we look at the different models, at first glance they tend to look the same. The difference is in the buttons: where you have to hold down the button on the Dyson V15 Detect to be able to vacuum, the Dyson Gen5 Detect has an on/off button. (We love these on/off buttons!)

Why Dyson has decided to add this so-called trigger button from the Dyson Gen5 is unknown. Many people will be happy with this development: I receive daily questions about whether the button can be locked, which is why I wrote an article about a Dyson Trigger lock. Allows you to lock the trigger buttons. That is no longer necessary with the Gen5.

This is a clear innovation that is a big win for the Gen5 in the dyson gen5 detect vs v15 comparison.

The interface is more or less the same, so no difference here.

The Dyson V15 Detect and Gen5 have an LCD screen on the top of the vacuum. This provides information about the battery level or error messages. (for example, if there is an airway blockage in your Dyson. You'll spot it here)

The LCD screen of the V15 and the Gen5 also provides information about what you are vacuuming. However, with the Gen5, this information is displayed slightly differently. You get to see precisely what you are vacuuming with sliding bars back and forth. For example, you can decide to keep sweeping the carpet for a while if a lot of pollen is detected. The Gen5 can also notify you when a surface is clean enough. The Dyson V15 cannot and does not do this.

In the v15 vs. gen5 fight, this is once again a win for the Gen5.

Battery life (one of the most important comparisons)

The battery life of Dyson stick vacuums can vary considerably. I registered a battery life of only 25 minutes in the Dyson V8 review. The Dyson V15 ended up with 60 minutes in my tests. The maximum battery life of the Dyson Gen5 Detect is better though; this one is about 70 minutes with regular usage. This makes it the Dyson with the most extended battery life!

Weight: The Gen5 Detect is slightly heavier

If you're looking for the best lightweight vacuum cleaner or if the weight of a vacuum is essential to you: you'll probably be better off opting for the Dyson V15. This weighs about 3 kilograms, half a kilogram lighter than the Gen5 Detect. (3.5 KG)

Price: $ 635 (be sure to check the discounts!) vs. $ 950

If we zoom in on the price, there is a vast difference. At $ 950, the Dyson Gen5 Detect costs much more than the Dyson V15 Detect ($ 635). Prices may vary based on included accessories. So on weight and price (two very important aspects), the Gen5 takes a ‘huge hit' compared to the (older) v15 model from Dyson.

Dyson Gen5 vs Dyson V15: The Similarities

It is of course the big question whether the Dyson Gen5 is such a good successor to the V15 that it is worth the enormous price difference. It is therefore good to consider the similarities of both Dyson stick vacuums.

Laser technology: Both detect floor brush

Adding the word ‘Detect' in both product names reveals that they both use laser technology. The Dyson V15 and Gen5 come with a floor brush with laser technology. I think it's a significant development: I found the laser technology to be of added value in my review, not in daily work but it can help. You can see the dust on the floor better and skip parts of the floor more quickly.

Both the Dyson V15 and Gen5 come with a floor brush with laser technology.

Both the V15 and the Gen5 have a Piezo sensor

Both the Dyson Gen5 and Dyson V15 have a built-in Piezo sensor. This sensor measures and detects specific particles that are sucked up. You can think of pollen, allergens, and dust particles. The piezo sensor also makes it possible to adjust the suction power automatically, for example, if an extra number of allergens are measured.

Dust capacity: same size

Both Dyson vacuum cleaners have a dust capacity of 0.77 liters. This is average in the world of vacuum cleaners.

With a dust capacity of 0.77 liters, you have to take into account that you have to empty the vacuum cleaner regularly. Speaking of maintenance, that is also the same with both stick vacuums. You can easily – and in the same way – empty them above the trash. Also the maintenance of the filter: you can clean or replace the Dyson filter by unscrewing it.

Design (except for different colors)

The Dyson Gen5 is again an absolute stick vacuum from Dyson. There are other colors: where the Dyson V15 is a mix of gold/yellow and metal, the Dyson Gen5 Detect is a bit more colorful. Colors such as yellow, purple, and turquoise.

Conclusion: Is the Dyson Gen5 better than the V15?

The big question now is, of course, which of the two stick vacuums is best to choose. Let me first say that the Dyson Gen5 Detect and the Dyson V15 are very good vacuum cleaners. Especially in the field of allergies because of the excellent filtration of both stick vacuums.

In a few ways, the Dyson Gen5 Detect is better than the V15: there is an integrated handheld vacuum, and with the new Fluffy Optic laser floor brush you can detect dust on the floor twice as well. With the new Gen5, you also get to see in real-time what you are vacuuming and when the surface is clean enough to continue. But the biggest thing is simply the increased battery life of the Gen5. 10 extra minutes with extra suction power is a nice innovation!

But the price… It's something we simply can't avoid in a gen5 detect vs v15 comparison, we personally feel a vacuum cleaner shouldn't be close to ~ $ 1000, for ~$ 630 the Dyson v15 is simply the better choice. The only way we would go for the Dyson Gen5 Detect is if you simply want the best of the best, no matter what the cost.

To summarize the summary: In my opinion, the Dyson Gen5 Detect is a (big) improvement on the Dyson V15, with things like the extended battery life and suction power being most important.

However, even with this, we would not buy it. We would go for the cheaper V15 and save ~$ 300 for other maybe even more important things! (like a nice dinner in a restaurant with the family! =) )

  1. Are you sure, you got the spec on weight correct?. On the YouTube video by James Dyson the Gen5 detect motor looks so tiny compared to the current V15 detect. I don’t understand why would it weigh more. My current genV15 detect too has a brush tool inside the pipe.

  2. You miss a major consideration. What is the difference in suction between the Gen5 and v15?

  3. Hey there,

You mention a starting price of $950 for the Gen5 Detect. At my local car dealership, that’s what you’d pay for an entry-level car. Anyway, I was wondering if there’s a more affordable option available, like a Gen5 with fewer accessories, sort of a basic model. Or is $950 really the absolute minimum price?

  4. what about the V15 absolute plus ?
i think it has more options similar to the Gen5 like the integrated built-in combi-crevice tool
